Among my favorite places to spend some quiet time in the early mornings during our Key West visits is a stroll through this 21-acre cemetery. After locating the cache, take time to walk around the area where you can find gravestones with epitaphs such as "At Least I Know Where He's Sleeping Tonight" and "I Told You I Was Sick." The cache is a memorial to the 266 sailors and marines who died aboard the USS Maine when it exploded and sank near Havanna in 1898, spurring the Spanish-American War. To log the cache, submit the answers to the following questions by e-mail: 1) What is the sailor holding in his right hand? 2) How many stars are in the circle around the memorial? 3) List the countries whose names appear on the ground mounted brass plate in front of the statue.
