Southernmost point of statewide (statelong) hiking trail; this point in the Big Cypress Preserve is a superb location for those wishing to see the Everglades up close and personal |
Cache is a virtual cache. Claiming credit requires a photo by the trail sign. Note that to reach this cache you will need to drive at least ten miles off the Tamiami Trail on a well maintained dirt road, along which you will see all the wildlife and fauna present in this ecosystem. Worth the trip for those who like to see the Everglades off the beaten path and without the airboat noise that is so ever present along Tamiami Trail. See web reference about this location for those who are serious hikers. Note: You do not need to hike to reach the cache, but you could from three different directions if you like. For info on the area visit http://www.florida-trail.org/ and/or http://www.nps.gov/bicy/index.htm

Burgi Dad and I planned a four day Road Trip, the second to last installment of our South Florida Challenge Quest http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=c1002b89-d0e4-4ba6-a0d3-804c032850af , to coincide with the AWEsome CacheApalooza GeoEvent - - probably one of the best GXing ideas we've had all year.
Taking our time, seeing what we want to see, meeting and greeting whoever we spot "in the wild," GXers or otherwise. Stopped here for our Monroe County cache, and to get a photo op in the heart of the Everglades. Easy to tell which ones are the northerners vs. us Floridians... we're bundled up, and they're in convertibles with the top down... Now off we go, ready for ANYthing! Have a blessed day. Happy caching ~~

Kat and I were making our way across the state to CacheApoloza and on the way knocking out the last of our South Florida Challenge caches. This one was perfect for our Monroe county cache. Also, this was the first time I had ever been this far into the Everglades. We saw some very interesting creatures back here including many from Canada. Thanks for bringing us to this spot.

I was out here on a mission and decided to claim this cache along the way. I don't think "dry foot" is an option here, at least at this time. We're out of rainy season and this still looks like a major slog. I've hiked on the trail in other areas, but am lacking the gear necessary for this segments's unique terrain.

This was an adventurous journey to this cache after 10pm in a toyota camry after the tropical depression had dumped plenty of water down this way. We kept our fingers crossed and headed in from the east, we saw alligators, snakes, coons, and possums. Jim got us to the location and then we kept heading west through some deep holes but finally made it out. Here is the required picture everyone should post.
