| My purpose in placing this cache is to introduce out-of-towners and probably some in-towners to a great viewing area of a bird rookery.Note -This has been verified as a land area that is managed by the Fakahatchee Strand State park and not part of the Everglades National Park. Here's the most correct map for those who are curious. MAP Operating hours are dawn to dusk. Bring a pen/pencil! |
I was first introduced to this area when I went on a canoing trip several years ago. I can never remember where the turn off is for this short road so when I found the road today, I decided to set a micro here to get others to see this area. Bring a canoe or kayak if that is your sport. Otherwise, bring your binoculars and observe the birds from a safe distance. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to view birds but there are usually some around throughout the daylight hours too. One word of advice, this turn-off is quick from this 60MPH highway so be ready when the GPS starts to beep. When approaching from Naples, there is a roadside picnic area not far from the turn-off for the cache. When approaching from Miami, you can always turn around in the roadside picnic area if you miss the road.

Neat spot, found with little difficulty. must admit, however, that I had to look up mephitic in the dictionary prior to heading out!

Interesting stop on our morning of caching with Gatorda. Spent quite a bit of time chatting with some Colorado tourists while we searched and explained what we were up to. Lots of big splashes in the lake, but the visitors reeled none in while we were there.

Found today with Grumpier99. However, on this beautiful cool day cache didn't deserve its "mephitic" name. Met some people from Colorado who were fishing and we told them what geocaching was all about.
