WORLDWATCH INSTITUTE |
|
The Worldwatch Institute
was born in 1974 and for decades it has been considered the most
authoritative point of observation of environmental trends in our planet. Its
institutional aim consists in supporting the evolution to a environmentally
sustainable society, where it is possible to meet the human needs without
threatening the natural environment or the prospects of future generations. The
Institute operates through interdisciplinary researches about the emerging
topics of global interest. The edition of the
present year in relation to the "State of the World" provides
readers with a roadmap to deal with the problems of a new sustainable
economy. State of the World ’99 witnesses the existence and the
practicability of a completely new conception of economy. It is possible to
suppose an environmental Revolution which should influence the economic world
as sweeping as the industrial Revolution, that put us on our present
unsustainable course. The authors argue that the transition to an
environmentally sustainable economy represents the greatest investment
opportunity in history. In the introduction to
the text some catastrophes, happened in 1998, are reported among other things
and unfortunately they reconfirm the IPCC’s expects (see page on the
greenhouse effect). In the Worldwatch
Institute's site you can find a few pages of introduction about the topics
covered in "State of the World 1999". |
