   CONSUMPTIONS OF ENERGY |

   As it is
written in the second chapter of "State of the World 99" the
combustible fossils provide most of the industrialized countries with more
than 90% of energy and the 75% on international scale (see table).                                                         |

   (1) It
includes biomass, hydrogen, Aeolian, geothermic and solar energy. As you
can see the renewable energies, among which also the hydroelectric energy
should be included, consist only of the 19% of global energy and even if they
can grant all the increments of energy requests in the next 10 years with a
quite optimistic forecast (a very prudential valuation superior than 15% to
the present production), the emissions of CO2 will remain constant. Basing
itself on numerous studies, the IPCC proves that it is possible to obtain in
the next 20-30 years an improvement of energy efficiency equivalent to 10-30%
at a low cost, without considering that it takes long years and exceptional
technological and organizational engagement to be able to achieve these results.
The past shows that the improvements of energy efficiency have been annulled
by the increment of the demand that the improvements themselves help. |
