Making the World Better
There are so many ways you can make the world a better place.
What if you did something nice for someone every day?
What if you volunteered at the local hospital
or visited with the elderly or mentored a child?
There are probably several places in your community
that would love to have volunteers. There are also tons
of sites that aren't listed here for organizations
that try to make the world better.
One person can make a difference.
Your community needs you!
American Red Cross - Providing disaster relief in the U.S. and around the world. The Red Cross accepts monetary donations as well as blood, tissue, and time. Get trained in First Aid and CPR. You can locate your local Red Cross center from this site.
Americorps - There are several volunteering programs including the NCCC* which is a team that travels from a living-base and works on a variety of projects and VISTA in which individuals work at a certain project in one community for a year. Check out these as well as programs in your own community.
Animal Rescue - Click on the purple button to help out an animal in need. You can also volunteer at your local humane society. They can always use items such as food and kitty litter.
ASPIRE - A semi-non-profit in Oregon whose goal it is to help more high school students realize post-secondary goals through the aid of community volunteers who serve as mentors. Find out how you can volunteer! This organization also currently partners with AmeriCorps. ASPIRE is funded partly by the state, partly through AmeriCorps, and partly through other grants.
The Breast Cancer Site - Click on the pink button to help fund free mammograms. Also be on the lookout for the pink ribbon on various products in your local stores. There are companies that give so much of the money you spend on their product to fund finding a cure. Examples of products include Yoplait yogurt and Hansen's Natural Soda.
Child Health - Click on the blue button to help children. 200,000 children die each day from preventable causes.
Combatting Prejudice - This link takes you to a printable version (PDF file) of Close the Book on Hate 101 Ways to Combat Prejudice which is put out by Barnes & Noble and the Anti-Defamation League.
Girl Scouts - All types of donations are welcome ... time, materials, and money. There is also a program for college students. Students pay the membership fee (it was $7 in 1999 through my council) and work through their local council both on their college campus and with the local troops. My favorite Girl Scout group is the Mount Magazine Girl Scout Council (mainly because that's who I served & worked through).
Habitat For Humanity - No doubt you've probably heard of this organization ... building quality affordable housing for people who need it.
The Hunger Site - You can click on a yellowy-orange button to donate food to those who need it. The food is paid for by advertisers on the site.
Pedals for Progress - This organization was started by a former PCV and involves fixing up old bikes and giving them to people who could really use them.
The Rainforest Site - Click on the green button to help save the rainforests.
