LEFT-MIDFIELDER: Steve McManaman v Dennis Wise
McManaman is getting frighteningly close to replicating John Barnes' England performances. Playing in his preferred position, where he has excelled at club level, he was anonymous on Wednesday, failing to make more than a couple of penetrating runs, charging straight into defenders in the opening period before opting to turn back and pass inside when faced with someone he might actually have to dribble around.
Wise, playing out of position on the left against Brazil, was far more impressive. If Scholes stays in the side, Keegan could opt for the safer option of Wise tucking in to let the left-back bomb on past him.

Wise was the only other player who you could rely on for an accurate pass and also offered some sort of attacking threat and variety from the middle of the park.
