Especie de tamaño pequeño, con hocico corto y obtuso. Tímpano no visible. Parótidas ovaladas próximas al ojo. Piel glandulosa con glándulas tibiales prominentes, redondas. Coloración marrón o verdosa brillante, con estrías dorsales claras características. Faz ventral blanquecina con manchas negras reticuladas. Hasta ahora, solo existen datos incompletos sobre los límites de variavilidad de este bufónido. El tamaño puede alcanzar 45 milímetros o más, siendo más pequeños los machos. La distribución de este Bufo va desde la Cordillera de Valdivia, Osorno, lagos valdivianos; oeste de la Patagonia (Nieden); Magallanes. Caracteres sexuales secundarios poco evidentes. Callosidades pigmentadas en los primeros dedos de las manos de los machos.

Bufo variegatus permanece aún entre los batracios menos conocidos de la fauna chilena. vive en los ambientes de selva húmeda y fría, y no es muy frecuente o abundante. Se han observado ejemplaros en cautiverio procedentes de la Región de Osorno; saltan muy dificilmente y se desplazan mas bien caminando; nadan muy mal y ha sido imposible registrar su voz; el macho emite raramente sonidos agudos, como piar de pollito. no parecen presentar reflejos de defensa nunca. Prácticamente su reproducción, ovipostura y desarrollo resultan desconocidos. La distribución altitudinal de este bufónido endémico varía entre 20 - 2.000 m.s.n.m. La distribución ecológica está dada para zonas oceánicas, en bosques de Nothofagus.

Su estado de conservación, según el Libro Rojo de los Vertebrados terrestres de Chile (Glade, 1993); es el siguiente:

Bufo variegatus stays yet between the batrachians less known of the Chilean fauna. Do you live in the wet jungle environments and cold, and it is not very frequent or abundant. They have been observed exemplarys in captivity originating from the Region of Osorno; jump very with difficulty and are displaced but well walking; swim very wrong and it has been impossible to register his voice; the male issues rarely acute sounds, as peeping of chick. they do not seem to present reflex of defense ever.
