CHAPTER 1
She woke in a lather of sweat, her heart pumping through her body at an accelerated rate. She opened her eyes and took a deep breath trying to calm her body down. It wasn’t working, her breathing was still heavy, coming in deep pants, her heart beating in her chest at surely double the rate it usually did. What had caused her to wake in the middle of the night so suddenly? A dream, but what was it about. She couldn’t remember, but it must have been good. It left her feeling good though, her body humming with desire she hadn’t felt in a long while. Laying in the dark she tried to remember. She kept coming up blank. She moaned softly to herself, wishing she could remember. It wasn’t coming to her though so she decided she needed a cool drink. Problem was as soon as she was up and walking around she was sure the dream would disappear from her memory. Not that there was too much to remember now. She sighed and got up.
Skye Madison put her robe on and padded quietly into the kitchen of the big house she had inherited from her grandparents a year before. Their passing had been during the saddest time of her life and not a day went by when she didn’t think of them and her lost love. Taking a bottle of cold water out of the fridge and pouring it into a big glass, she opened the sliding door in the family room, walking out onto the huge deck. She ran the cool surface over her forehead, shaking the feelings of sadness overtaking her again. She loved this house. It had so many happy memories from her childhood. Days spent with her grandparents and parents. Her parents now lived in southern Florida where her dad worked in semi retirement. She missed them a lot, but her life was here in Virginia Beach.
The waves pounded on the shore tonight, the ocean rougher than usual. Skye frowned to herself, looking up and sniffing the air. Was a storm brewing? If it was she hoped it wasn’t a bad one, they scared her. Maybe that’s what had her dreaming whatever it was that had her so worked up. No, she knew it had been a sexual dream which was not like her at all. But that’s what it had been, she was convinced.
She took a sip of her drink and heard someone behind her. “Skye, what are you doing out here at this time of the night?”
“Hi Jay, what are you doing up?” Skye asked her, answering her with a question of her own. Jay was her life long friend, best friends since childhood when Jay’s parents moved here to live.
“I heard something, obviously you, and decided to come and check. Looks like a storm might be brewing. Is that what woke you?”
“No, I had a dream and it woke me,” Skye said to her gazing at the darkness ahead of her. A flash of lightning illuminated the sky and almost immediately the breeze picked up a little. It was still mild, but the air felt unsettled. “Looks like we are going to get that storm,” she said. The dream had rattled her usual composure.
“A dream? Tell me about it,” Jay asked scooting closer to where Skye sat.
Skye looked at Jay confused for a moment before snapping out of her daze. She wrapped her robe around herself a little tighter, the silk pyjamas she wore not warm enough for outdoors tonight. She thought about what she would tell Jay, but she knew anything but the truth would not be believed. “I don’t know to tell the truth. But I woke up, my heart pounding.”
“A nightmare?” Jay looked concerned.
“No, I don’t think so. More,” she looked at Jay not knowing whether or not to tell her.
“More what Skye, tell me.”
“Sexual,” she said the word rolling off her tongue.
Jay’s eyes opened wide. “Oh? Tell me more.”
Skye shrugged. “That’s it. I can’t remember a thing except the way I was feeling when I woke up.” She looked sideways at Jay. “It was nice.”
“Way to go Skye!” She high fived her. “So unlike you. I like it.” She winked at her.
“Well. It was only a dream, and one I can’t remember at that. So don’t go getting too excited about it.”
“Stranger things have been known to happen. Maybe it’s a sign of things to come.”
Skye made a sound at Jay. “I don’t think so. But I am going back to bed. I have a big day tomorrow and as it is I will probably look like something the cat dragged in. Those loveable rugrats don’t care if I have had enough sleep or not.”
“You Skye? Never. You are always beautiful,” Jay said smiling at her.
Skye thumped Jay on the shoulder as she got up and walked passed her. She went back in to the kitchen to rinse her glass and bid Jay goodnight again before heading back to her room. Jay sat a while longer on the deck, wishing Skye could get over the devastation she had felt when her fiancé Trevor had been so tragically killed in the boating accident twelve months ago, a time when her life had already been in turmoil with the loss of her grandparents. Trevor had been her strength to get through that heartbreak and only weeks later his life had so tragically been taken too. Her life had never been the same, closing up to the world and any chance at love despite Jay’s attempts, throwing her life into her kindergarten teaching.
Back in her room Skye picked up her photo of Trevor and tears welled in her eyes. She knew it wasn’t him she had dreamt of and she somehow felt she had betrayed him. She knew her subconscious was something she couldn’t control, but it should have been Trevor she was dreaming about. Oh she wanted him back in her arms so badly it made her ache all over. Maybe if she went back to sleep now Trevor could again return to her as he did many nights, his big brown eyes looking at her with so much love as he held her. The breeze was picking up again and she walked over to the window capturing the curtains blowing about. She closed the window catching the lock and turned back. She took off her gown and laid it neatly over the chair in her room, climbing back into the bed. She pulled the covers over her to ward away the chill she felt, closing her eyes. Sleep overtook almost instantly.

“So any more dreams last night?” Jay asked Skye.
Skye sighed, “Yes, I had another dream.” She almost sounds disappointed.
“Well, do I have to pry it out of you? What was it about?”
Skye shrugged. “All I remember is blue eyes. That’s all I remember.”
“Ooooh, sounds interesting. Nice blue eyes?” Jay wanted to push the point and Skye couldn’t work out why. What was the big deal about her dream all of a sudden?
“Yes, nice blue eyes, mesmerising blue eyes. They are all I remember, but they were so memorable.”
“Maybe,” Jay began an idea formulating in her mind and she wondered if she should voice her thoughts. Yes, she was tired of pussyfooting around Skye when it came to relationships. “Maybe it is a sign. A sign of the new man in your life.” Skye gave Jay a warning look but she chose to ignore it. “Serious. You know how these things have happened in the past.”
Skye made a face at Jay. “Forget it Jay, I am not interested.”
“Yeah, I know you aren’t. Skye!” She paused. “You have to get over Trevor. I know it hurts and you loved him, but he’s not coming back. It’s time you got on with life.” She came over and hugged her friend. “You know I only want what’s best for you Skye. Please, you have to get over Trevor.” She looked down at her friend sitting at the breakfast table and noticed the tears in her eyes. She felt really guilty for making her feel like that, but she also knew life went on, she had to live in the present not the past. She hugged her friend while she cried.
“I loved him so much Jay,” she sobbed.
“I know you did. But twelve months is a long time Skye. You do need to live again and not hide behind your work wishing he was back. Maybe your dreams are trying to tell you something.”
Skye shrugged and Jay knew that a tiny piece of the ice around her heart was being chipped away. It was still going to take a lot of time she knew that. But she wouldn’t give up on her friend. For now she would drop the subject. Time was getting by and both of them had to get out of there. She would let the subject drop for now.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Brian sat on a stool looking out at the city below him. Normally scared of heights for some reason it comforted him to be looking out today. The early morning traffic moved about below, looking like tiny matchbox cars on some sort of elaborate miniature design. It fascinated him to watch today, which was so unusual. He was feeling odd.
“Yo Rok,” came the call from behind him. “Brian!” someone yelled, breaking him out of his daydreams.
He shook his head to clear his thoughts and looked behind him at Nick approaching with a basketball in his hand. “What’s up Nick?”
“I’ve been calling you for ages, I could be asking you that. I just wanted to know if you wanted to play some one on one before we gotta get to rehearsals.”
“Nah, I don’t think so.” Brian mumbled.
Nick reached over and put his hand to Brian’s forehead. “Are you sick? You have to have a fever. You never pass on shooting a few hoops with me. Now I can really say what’s up?” Nick joked with his friend.
Brian looked almost dazed as he stared at Nick. Nick waved his hand in front of Brian’s eyes to wake him up. “Sorry Nick, just got something on my mind.”
“What’s on your mind? Something happen we should all know about?”
“No, not really. I had a dream that just won’t budge from my mind.”
“A dream?” Brian could see the look of disbelief on Nick’s face.
“Yeah, a dream.”
“What about?” Nick asked reaching over to pour himself a drink of juice out of Brian’s fridge. He took a drink, waving his finger at Brian, reminding him to answer him.
“That’s just it Nick. I don’t remember, but there was something about it that I can’t shake.” Brian searched his memory, but the more he thought about it, the more it slipped away.
“About a woman maybe?” Nick asked. He wasn’t going to let go of this.
“I think it was.”
“Oh? Wake up all hot and bothered?” Brian peered up at Nick through squinted eyes. “You did didn’t you?” Nick laughed aloud. “You need a cold shower then not basketball. No maybe a game will get your mind off it.” He looked at Brian and shook his head laughing. This one had really got under Brian’s skin.
“Give it up Nick.” Brian warned.
“Was she pretty?” he asked not wanting to leave this alone. He loved to tease Brian about women, or the lack of in his life.
“I don’t remember.” Brian said looking off in to the distance.
“So what was it about?”
Brian sighed loudly and shrugged. “I don’t know. I can’t remember anything about it, just that it was about a girl. I just can’t shake it though.”
“Well, you’re going to have to,” Nick said. “It’s almost time to do our sound check. Time enough to think about this tonight after the concert.” He winked at Brian. “Maybe you’ll have another dream tonight.”
Brian shrugged. He’d like to dream again. He wanted to go home, he needed a break and thought about going away somewhere after the tour was over. But they still had some time to go before that would happen. Maybe his dreams could keep him sane until he had time off. Or maybe it would drive him insane.
Nick started to move away and Brian got up to follow him. The ball came sailing up over Nicks shoulder and his reflexes had him reaching for the ball bouncing it along once it was in his hands, bouncing it along as they walked. The dream he had had, that had been so elusive in his mind was forgotten for now.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Skye kicked off her shoes once she returned home late with Jay. They had gone for a movie and dinner after work, her as a kindergarten teacher at a local school, and Jay teaching some of the older kids. They had both always loved kids and swore they would be teachers when they were little. Their wishes had come true and now both worked at the same school.
She had been glad Jay had suggested the movie tonight, mainly because it kept her mind off the dreams she had thought about all day. She still remembered the blue eyes as vividly as if she had met this person. They mesmerised and excited her, but she didn’t want to admit it to anyone else. It was still early, but she wanted to go to bed. Maybe she would dream more tonight.
She shook her head at herself. What was she thinking? This wasn't like some soap opera she could just turn on and off as she chose. She heard the rumble of thunder in the distance and walked outside on the deck again. She had passed Jay who was marking some of her class homework on the kitchen table. Jay hadn’t said a word to her as she walked passed and Skye guessed she had picked up on her mood. She wished she understood it herself.
Skye stayed out on the deck watching the electrical light show the storm had put on that evening. It was still out to sea, the sound of the thunder rumbling occasionally and she hoped it stayed out there. It was unusual for it not to come on to the land like last night, but she hoped it happened again. Jay joined her quietly for some time, bringing Skye a cup of coffee when she arrived. Skye drank the coffee but was eager to get to bed when she finished. She said goodnight to Jay and left her on the deck as she had the night before. All she wanted now was to go to sleep.
