CHAPTER 25

Brian drove Skye home, his mind preoccupied with his plans for the evening. He wanted it to be perfect for her and ideas were tumbling around his mind.

“Are you okay Brian? You seem preoccupied.” Skye asked him.

“Huh? No, I’m okay.” He drove the car into her driveway, noticing that Jay was home and Daniel was there too. He jumped out of the car and took her bags out of the trunk, catching up with her on the front step. He pulled Skye into his arms, kissing her softly on her forehead.

“Skye, I need to go do something. Will you come over later on? Have dinner with me? We can be alone there,” he asked her, nodding towards Daniels car to emphasise his point.

She frowned. “Um. Sure. I thought you might have come in for a while.” She said to him, confused at his change of attitude.

“I can’t. I have to go somewhere and I am running late. I just remembered,” he said backing away before returning to kiss her quickly. His face softened when he looked at her. “I’ll see you soon?” he asked, his voice husky.

Skye smiled at him, falling under his spell again. “I’ll be there. You can count on it.” She stopped short of telling him she wanted him. Something in his change of attitude stopped her, but it didn’t stop her from feeling it.

Brian turned quickly and walked to the car. He lingered at the open door watching Skye, but then climbed in and drove away leaving Skye puzzled. What could he be up to?

**********

Brian checked the room to make sure everything was right before moving on to the next room. Yes, it all looked as he had planned and he was feeling mighty proud of himself. Okay he had ordered the dinner because he knew he wouldn’t have time to cook in time or even do it properly. Everything else he had done himself.

“Big date tonight,” came the voice he had missed lately, scaring him out of his thoughts. He reached up to his heart that had skipped a beat.

“Don’t sneak up on me like that,” he told her regaining his composure quickly.

“Sorry.” She was quiet for a while and he thought he had offended her. “So? Big date tonight?” she finally asked again.

“You could say that.” He wondered how much he should tell her and didn’t say anything.

“You’re going to tell her aren’t you?” she asked with excitement laced with a little bit of wariness in her voice.

“Tell her?” he asked, but he knew what she meant.

She sighed dramatically and Brian could almost swear he saw something spinning around. “You’re going to tell her that you love her aren’t you?” Brian grinned and blushed. “Oh you are! This is wonderful news. You two make such a wonderful couple. You’ll be so happy the two of you. Oh I am so excited. How will you tell her?” she asked. She watched Brian shrug. He didn’t want to tell anyone yet. “Oh!” Her voice was suddenly distant and sad sounding.

“What’s wrong?” Brian asked concerned.

“Once you tell her, and she tells you, I have to… we have to… we have to leave.”

“Leave? What do you mean? Give us some privacy?” Brian asked. He had gotten used to her being around, the thought of her not being there anymore was one he didn’t want to contemplate.

“No Brian, leave as in go away, to the afterlife where we should already be.”

“You won’t be able to talk to me anymore?”

“No, unless we can see you really need us, and then it’s under exceptional circumstances.”

“But I’ll miss you,” Brian said sadly. She had become very special to him.

“I’ll miss you too Brian. But we will be watching out for you. Both of you. You know you will have a good life together.” He felt a warm tingle on his face, as if a hand was touching him. “Tell her how you feel about her. Everything will work out for the best.” She sighed again. “Now I must go get the others. We must be ready.”

“So this is goodbye?” he asked sadly.

“I’m afraid so Brian. Have a good life. Just look after her. Promise me that.”

“I promise,” he said. He felt her sliding away and wiped his eyes, not at all surprised to find them wet. He was going to miss her more than he was willing to admit.

The doorbell rang breaking him out if his thoughts. He wiped his eyes again and checked everything over quickly once again before hurrying to the door.

Skye stood in the doorway when he opened it looking more beautiful than he ever remembered. His heart leapt when she smiled sweetly at him a shyness shining from her eyes. She looked nervous and his heart went out to her.

“Skye, you look so beautiful.” He held out his hand and took her fingertips in his. “Come here.” He pulled her into his arms and lowered his face to kiss her sweetly. It wasn’t a deep kiss, just enough to let Skye know exactly how he felt about her. He would tell her with words later, when the moment was right. Now he just wanted to hold her in his arms and feel her body against his, her lips moving below his. This was how it should be.

Dinner turned into an evening of pure romance. Brian had planned everything to the finest detail and for once everything was going right. He made Skye feel like the most special person on earth. He wanted her to know she was the most special person to him. As they sat on the deck later in the evening, Skye as close to Brian as she could get, their arms around each other, she thanked him for the evening.

“It isn’t over yet,” he said to her. He kissed the top of her head and Skye sighed to herself. This was just perfect and if she read all the signs correctly, the night would go on till morning. She ached to be with him in the most intimate way. Brian turned her slightly and looked at her, looking troubled by something.

“Is something wrong Brian?” she asked him frowning.

He took a breath and looked out over the ocean, surprisingly calm that night. “Nothing really wrong. I just need to tell you something before…” he stopped. “Skye, you know how I have seen your grandparents in my dreams? How I have heard them while I was awake?” he asked her.

“Yes,” she said smiling at the thought. It was still impossible to explain but it was something she was thankful for. Without their appearances in their dreams and their lives they may never have found one another.

“Well, there was one other person who has visited me.” Brian felt Skye stiffen almost immediately.

“Trevor!” she whispered, barely audible.

Brian took her hand and lifted it to her lips, kissing her fingertips. “Skye, I know you loved him, I know he was, and will always be an important part of your life. And you in his. He told me so.”

“He told you?” He could barely hear her.

“Yes, a while ago. He came to me in a dream to tell me he was letting you go, to ask me to look after you. Skye I promised him I would. I promised your grandparents I would. It’s a promise I intend to keep.”

For a long time neither of them spoke. It would have been easier not to have brought Trevor up, but Brian had to bring it out in the open, for his own peace of mind as much as Skye’s. He had to know she was absolutely ready to move on.

“He came to me too,” she said softly, but confidently, which Brian took heart in. “He told me I had to move on. I had already made that decision by that stage, but I was still confused.” She looked up at Brian. “Remember the day you told me about your life?” Brian nodded. “He told me I had to take a chance with life, not just sit here and wait.” She thought again. “He told me to give you a chance. But the funny thing was, I had already decided I would. I had to. Brian, I don’t want to lose you. I can’t lose you.”

Brian pulled her tightly into his arms, his chin resting on her head. “Skye, you are never going to lose me. You mean too much to me.”

They sat quietly in each other’s arms for a long time after that, both of them deep in thought. The night sky was quiet that night, the occasional wave breaking on the shore the only sound. The moon shone on the black ocean, shimmering brightly. Skye moved back and looked at Brian, the moonlight shining in his eyes as it did on the water. “Brian, what did you have to go and get today when we got home?” she asked him. His disappearance had confused her.

He smiled at her, his heart picking up it’s pace. This was the moment he had been waiting for. “Come with me.” He stood and took her hand to lead her into the living room. He picked up the remote control to the CD player and flicked a switch. A song began to play and Brian began to sing along with the lyrics. At first Skye didn’t take any notice of the words to the song, content to be held in Brian’s arms, gazing into his eyes and seeing nothing else in the world but him, hear nothing but that beautiful voice . She would be content to stay there forever. Gradually she became aware of the words and almost immediately tears began to form.

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

She recognised the Savage Garden song she had long admired and never imagined it would be so true to her life. The words fit their situation so well, she would have thought the song was written for the two of them. He paused while the song continued on with music, then he sang some lyrics that tugged at her heartstrings.

Ooooo Ooooo A Thousand Angels Dance Around you
Ooooo Ooooo I am complete now that I found you.

The chorus played again but Brian stopped singing. “I love you Skye. I think I always have.” He took a steadying breath, the song affecting him as much as it had her. His heart was beating uncontrollably and his body was humming. “I loved you from the moment you appeared in my dreams and when I saw you at Daniels party I fell in love with you all over again. I will always love you.” He lowered his lips for another soft kiss and moved away to watch her reaction. Tears had built up and threatened to spill over and he reached up with his thumb to wipe them away.

“Brian, I…” she sobbed. “Brian, I love you too. So very much.”

Brian wanted to kiss her, to carry her away into his bed and make love to her right at that moment, but something held him back.

“Brian, we don’t have a thousand angels do we?”

“No. We have three angels who have been waiting for this moment.”

“Do you think they are watching?”

Brian kissed her forehead and smiled. “I’m sure they heard every word.”

She sniffed, happy that their angels would now be free to join their world. She knew her happiness was what had kept them here. Now they knew she was happy. “I’m glad Brian. I’ll miss them, but I am happy for them.”

Brian lowered his lips to Skye’s for a long awaited kiss as three ghostly spirits hovered above them their faces radiating happiness mixed with a tinge of sadness. It was time for them to go, the Heavens now calling for them. They would always watch out for the two of them, but for now it was time to move on. Slowly the images floated skyward, their light gradually dimming before finally joining in one final burst of colourful light high in the sky.

“Did you see that Brian?” Skye asked looking up.

“The rainbows and fireworks when I kissed you?” he asked her and she smiled. “Oh Skye, I want you so badly. I ache to make love to you.” He wanted to kiss her forever, but he wanted so much more.

“Brian you have to know I want you just as badly. Make love to me, please.”

His lips crashed down on hers again, the intensity building as he lifted her into his arms and carried her to his bedroom. He groaned into her mouth as he lowered her to the ground, her body sliding along his length increasing the ache he already felt. He broke the kiss, moving back far enough to look into her eyes. “I love you so much,” he said before joining their lips again, his tongue pressing against hers in an intimate dance of love and desire.

Their hands began to explore each other’s bodies and the barrier of clothing was becoming a burden. Skye tugged at Brian’s shirt, freeing it from his jeans and running her hands up and down the warm skin of his back. She pulled him closer to her body feeling his desire pressed against her and moaned, her own desire racing out of control. She didn’t know how much longer she could wait.

“Woah, Baby,” Brian said to her breathlessly as he pulled away, kissing her forehead, unwilling to break the contact. “We have all night my love.” She whimpered at the thought. “This will be a special night, I’m going to make it special for you.”

“It already is special Brian. I want you so much, so completely. Please make love to me.”

He smiled tenderly, loving the way things were going between them. His heart was bursting with love for the woman in front of him and he did want to make this a night they would both remember forever. He still had plans for them.

Skye suddenly stepped back, but not out of Brian’s arms. “You’re right Brian, I'm sorry. I just… I don’t know, these feelings I have for you are overwhelming. They are so strong.”

“Don’t apologise Skye.” She was looking at him with such love in her eyes he almost relented and dragged her into the bed, caveman style.

She sniffed and looked around. “Brian! Roses. Oh My God look at them all.” She turned and looked at the rose filled room her back against Brian, not willing to leave his arms. “They smell so divine. You really did plan this to be special, didn’t you?”

Brian turned her around again, his lips now inches from hers. He didn’t think he could wait any longer. “Yes. For you, anything,” he said before urgently plunging his mouth back onto hers. He kissed her longingly, deeply, letting her know how he felt without real words.

“Now who’s in a hurry?” she laughed at him throatily.

“I am! I need you Skye.”
