Quotes From the Book

In discussing why women may take offense to this book: "Rape is horrific for women.  The mere thought of rape arouses anxiety, revulsion, and anger, so it is not surprising that women are very ambivalent about subjecting rape to scientific scrutiny." - foreward, page ix

In discussing why rape exists: "Human rape arises from men's evolved machinery for obtaining a high number of mates in an environment where females choose mates.  If men pursued mating only within committed relationships, or if women did not discriminate among potential mates, there would be no rape...it is entirely clear, however, that rape is centered in man's evolved sexuality." - page 190-191

"Although women sexually desire physically attractive men, they may receive few material benefits from them.  The female's strategy might, therefore, include displaying to physically attractive males an unwillingness to mate.....which may increase the man's perception of  her value....and thus may result in her getting more material benefits from the male than she would get in the absence of the display.  If a woman's display of reluctance is truly effective, a man who achieves copulation with her will perceive that he acheived it by force." - page 70

Discussing why victims are often questioned about the validity of their claims: "The movement to reform rape laws might also benefit from a better and more widespread understanding of how and why deception is used by some women....many legal scholars have interpreted the traditional requirement of corroboration in rape cases as indicating a distrust of women...girls and women, relative to boys and men, tell more false stories about adversaries, gossip about them, start rumors about them, and use ostracism and manipulation of public opinion as tactics." - page 159

Discussing women as deceitful: "We suggest, also, that people are especially concerned about the credibility of women's allegations where sex is involved...people everywhere understand sex to be something that women have and that men want...human evolutionary history [produced] females who used sex and promises of sex to manipulate men and get resources from them...clearly, women behave this way far more often than men...women seem to be more deceitful about their sexual interests in individuals of the opposite sex (e.g., behaving as if sexually interested when in fact they aren't), about sexual arousal (e.g., faking orgasm), and about sexual history (e.g., claiming to have had fewer partners than the actual number).  Studies also suggest that women are more deceitful with respect to mateship fidelity.  Thus, especially when sex is involved (as it is with rape), there may be an evolved intuitution that women sometimes lie for their own gain.....[which may lead] to skepticism and to reluctance to judge in favor of a woman who 'cries rape.'" - page 160

Discussing the reason laws were createdfor statutory rape: "The application of statutory rape laws to women as old as the late teens may have to do with their fathers' interests...parents may try to manipulate, even coerce, long pre-sexual period for their daugters, thereby making them more valuable on the mateship market...thus, parents who effectively control pubescent and adolescent daughters' social lives may increase the daughter's mate value and their chances of obtaining wealthy, caring husbands...central here is the motivation of the parents (especially fathers) to limit the pre-marriage sexual behavior of their daughters." - page 164

Discussing that the reason rape is painful to women is because it reduces her reproductive success (by being deprived of her chance to select the best father for her children and also by possibly  losing her current spouse because he becomes jealous): "...pain in response to rape is affected by the woman's age (and thus her fertility), by her marital status, by her treatment by the rapist, and by whether there was penile penetration of the vagina....each of these factors would have affected the likelihood of unwanted pregnancy and potential loss of a mate's protection, resources, and care." - page 94

Discussing that increased violence during rape reduces the victim's trauma by making her claim more believable: "As violence [during rape]  increases, the psychological  pain of the victim declines...this was predicted because a victim may have less difficulty convincing her mate that rape rather than consensual sex has occurred if she exhibits physical evidence that sexual access was forced." - page 92

Discussing the cause of marital rape: "Raping an unwilling mate may be a male tactic of sperm competition.  A women's sexual unreceptivity may suggest to her partner that she is having consensual intercourse with another male.  Because men relate sexual unwillingness and resistance in their long-term mates with infidelity, sexual unwillingness may lead to sexual jealousy, and sometimes to rape as a sperm-competition tactic."   - page 77-78
