Joseph was a First officer aboard the Barque
"Caswell".
His ship departed Newcastle, Australia
in late February 1899 with a load of coal for Guayaquil, Equador.
The "Caswell" was then to go to England, after which Joseph was
to return to New Zealand as captain of the ship and bringing Mary with
him. They never reached Guayaquil and nothing more was ever heard
of the "Caswell" or her crew.
A subsequent enquiry found that it was
likely the ship foundered during a storm in the Tasman Sea, a few days
after their departure from Newcastle, due to the (well-known) unstable
nature of her cargo.
Mary continued to correspond with Joseph's
family and relatives for some years.

It was said in amongst some of the family
recollections that Mary waited forever for Joseph to return ...
The last photo we have of her is with two
children at Aberdeen.
