INDIAN SOCIETY OF VICTIMOLOGY

 

The Indian Society of Victimology, is a professional Organization started in the year 1992, working for the cause of victims of crime. It comprises of Social scientists, Professors, Research scholars, Students and Criminal Justice functionaries from all over India as its members.  Prof.K.Chockalingam, Vice-Chancellor, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli,  is  the President of ISV. The ISV in its short period since its genesis in August 1992, has organized the following symposia:

 

·          "Female Infanticide" on 24 April 1993.

·          "Compensation to Victims of Property Crimes" on 14 August 1993.

·          "Custodial Violence - Problems and Prevention" on 29 January 1994.

·          "Victims of Road Accidents" on 3 February 1995.

·          "Victims of Food Adulteration" on 14 August 1995.

·          "Victims of Ragging" on 14 February 1997.

·          "Victims of Sexual Harassment" on 30 November 1998.

·          "Hostages of Hijacking - Dimensions of Victimization", on 4 February   

          2000.

·          "Society as Victims of Corruption" on 23 February 2001.

 

Biennial Conferences of the ISV

·          Ist Biennial Conference 1994 – Chennai – Theme: Victims of Crime

·          IInd Biennial Conference 1996 – Bangalore – Theme: Victim Bill

·          IIIrd Biennial Conference 1999b– New Delhi – Theme: Child Victims

·          IVth Biennial Conference 2002– Chennai – Theme: Cyber Crimes 

 

The major achievements of ISV include

 

·          Organizing four Biennial Conferences of ISV, in order to advocate for 

         the rights of the victims

·          Publishing a newsletter for the cause of the Victims

·          The Government of Tamil Nadu has set up a "Victim Assistance Fund" in April 1995. Tamil Nadu is the first State in India to set up such a fund to assist victims of violent crimes in pursuance of the recommendations of ISV.

·          Prof. K. Chockalingam, President of Indian Society of Victimology and Vice-Chancellor, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli, has conducted a research project on "Victimization survey in four major cities in Tamil Nadu State in India".

·          Prof. K. Chockalingam, President, Indian Society of Victimology and a Life Member of the World Society of Victimology since 1985 has been elected as Vice-President of World Society of Victimology for 3 years from 2000 to 2003.
