Iowa City Babe Ruth Highlights

What started out as Veterans Hospital Employee Community Involvement became a very competitive and organized league for America's favorite past time. Frank Bates and many other organizers gave the youth of Iowa City a chance to play in organized baseball for the first time at the age when young men were too old to play Little League.

To organize, there was a need for enough men to have four teams of 12 on a roster to be a chartered league with Babe Ruth Baseball. This happenened in 1952.

Among the fields used were one at City Park, one east of Kinnick Stadium, and one across from Kinnick Stadium where the new University of Iowa Hospital Eye Clinic was built.

Some of the past and present Iowa City Babe Ruth coaches include 1993 Babe Ruth Hall of Fame Inductee Nick Welter, George Cornwall (30 years and still going in Babe Ruth), Don Winter (current Assistant State Commissioner), former Mayors of Iowa City, District Attorneys, Police Officers, Firefighters, University of Iowa staff, Doctors of Medicine, psychiatrists, and many other members of the Iowa City community.
