Upside-down or downside-up, the most important
perspective is always your own, whenever
other people try to put you down.
About the author /illustrator:
May M. Tobias received her Bachelor
of Fine Arts degree
cum laude, from the University of the Philippines. She left the
world of advertising early this year to have more time to write
and illustrate more children's books. Among the ad agencies she's
worked for are J. Walter Thompson, McCann Erickson and
Campaigns & Grey. Now she divides her time between teaching at
the UP College of Fine Arts and handling the communications
requirements of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation. She is the
author and illustrator of two Adarna picture books, "Amor (Or,
The Bat Who Thought She Was An Owl" and "Estrellita", based
on her Palanca prize-winning short story, "Little Star". She has
participated in the following story anthologies for children as
either writer or illustrator, or both: "All From The Same Tree"
(Adarna), "Water In The Ring of Fire" (Osnofla), and "Gintong
Habihan" (Tahanan). Her illustrations are also featured in the
postcardbook "INKwento : Tales Told to Filipino Children",
"Catch Me a Firefly", and "The Filipino Cookbook", all by
Bookmark. Rene Villanueva's "12 Kwentong Pamasko
(12 Christmas Stories)" (Tahanan Books) and Grace Chong's
"The Boy Who Had Five Lolas" (Bookmark) are her latest books.

Her father
is an owl.
Her mother
is an owl.
Is there
any reason
to think
she ISN'T
an owl?
Amor thought she
was an extremely
talented little owl,
for she could easily
move along the tree's
branches upside-down.
Above her, the tree's
leaves overlapped and
spread out like a great
green dome against
the sky.
