Old Deuteronomy is the patriarch of the Jellicle tribe. He has lived quite a long time. He's outlived at least nine wives, and according to some, maybe closer to ninety-nine. He is a rather large cat, with a long, gray, shaggy coat which the kittens (and sometimes Mistoffelees) will hide in when scared or nuzzle into when happy to see him. Old Deuteronomy is the cat who chooses which Jellicle will go up to the Heaviside Layer. He is quite wise, and sees that Grizabella really is sorry for anything she may have done in the past. After she sings at the end of the first act, you can see him reaching out for her. He is a kind cat, and probably is the proginator of most of the Jellicle tribe.
