Well, where do I start? Idym (ITEM) began in 1996 in a small town called Walnut Grove. An old friend that used to live in their basement gave Jon an old pair of Westbury drums, and he sat for hours trying to figure out how the hell to play them. Trying to comprehend the noise, Ben thought he would join him and buy a bass guitar. But he wanted something cheap, so he went with a samick bass guitar. Growing up with music like rancid, NOFX, pennywise and face to face, he always loved the sound of the crisp bass. Lots of tone! Playing for hours each day, Jon and Ben got some old buddies (Joel Omand and Dave Walley), and hammered out a couple of cover songs. They thought bro hyme, and brews were perfect for them, cause there wasn't much to do in Walnut Grove besides hanging with friends, drinking, sk8boarding and listening to old punk rock.
A short time after playing their hearts out, they thought they were good enough for playing in front of people. They were right. Their first show was a party in small basement; it was packed with people and friends. The brews couldn’t have been a better song to start off, Joel was the best entertainer around, he got the crowed going right away. A good year passed and they continued to play small parties, but like the saying goes, all good things come to an end. Joel and Dave left the band and we all went our separate ways.
So 98 came round, and a new band had begun. A Punk ska band! Laughing Out Loud. Ben always loved playing the guitar, even when Idym was around, he would stay up hours of the night in the basement of there house with Jon, and play until there fingers bled. Tim Armstrong was a big influence on Ben; he loved the sound and the feel of the Gibson epiphone hollowbody. It seemed we all needed new equip, Jon loved the sound of different drum players like lagwagon and strungout, so he needed something with a heavy kit. So right away he bought one and we called up a buddy (Rhett Bradshaw), and started playing right away. The three of them played for a good three months straight, and they recorded the first 12-song CD. They never went big with it; they only kept it with friends. It just wasn’t full enough for them, so they thought another guitar player would fill that void. So they called Dave Walley up and asked if he wanted to start up again, and they did.
Well 99 came, and so did their first public show. A battle of the bands. Not many people were there, and the bands were not even close to what they expected. So they went on stage with complete open minds, and they finished with a tight set. As soon as they started to play, people gathered round to hear the clean vocals and crisp sounds of laughing out loud. People went insane, but once again, it was their only show. Rhett left the band, and Ben started to play bass again, and the three of them formed IDYM once more.
12 new songs were made, and so they thought it was time to show people their stuff. So one day they met these guys in a pop punk band called Marlinspike, and they wanted to hear what they sounded like. So they all gathered in a small jam room and played for hours. So time passed and more songs were made. Joel Dupont, who was the bass player for Marlinspike decided he liked our sound and was more in to sk8punk then pop punk. So he came over to Idym, and that's one move they will never regret.
So now it's the year 2001, and the band has grown, with playing shows and making friends. So if you ever have a chance to catch these guys live, you won't be disappointed. Their love and talent of music will make you want to get up and sing.
