Various aspects of Linux have been studied or developed as part of academic work such as graduate theses. A CS student can do serious, professional-level work, and examine serious, professional-level source code. Students who have assignments on Unix computers at school can do the work at home on their PCs, and then confidently bring it it to the public labs (or just dial in from home) and be confident that very little, if any, modifications will need to be made.
