1853

John McNeil-William McKneale

27 June-John McNeil’s first wife, Margaret Jane Cavendish (McNeil) passes away in St. Louis, MO. (Date found from the family story, "Sketches of Life of John McNeil")

(Note from Peter McDonald-13 July 2001-I got this information from family story, "Sketches of Life of John McNeil". It mentions in one paragraph that John McNeil had arrived in the St. Louis, Missouri area from the Isle of Man after going through different areas and set up a shoe shop and in the next sentence it mentions the death of Margaret Jane Cavendish, so she may have died around that area. This family story also states that John McNeils two brothers, Richard and William left the Isle of Man and went all the way to America and to the St. Louis area with John McNeil. Later, John’s brothers wanted to see "more of the rest of the world" and one went to Iowa and one to Australia. John McNeil and Margaret Jane Cavendish (McNeil) had a son come across with them, John Edward McNeil.

(Note from Peter McDonald-13 July 2001- John Edward McNeil is discussed in more detail in the John McNeil Timeline. To be posted)

Photo of McNeil family, mostly unidentified, probably at Mary Jane QUINN McNeil's funeral, Sept., 1910. A picture of John C. McNeil is in the insert on the right, Mary Jane's insert is on the left; the large picture is probably Mary Jane as well.
Making some assumptions, their blind daughter Elizabeth Ann (McNEIL) FULLER is on the left; next to her is probably Margaret Jane (McNEIL) SCHMIDT (as their oldest daughter Mary Jane (McNEIL) KIRKHAM had passed away previously); Harriet Jeannette (McNEIL) BRADSHAW is the woman on the right.
Based on a family history account: "She raised two grandchildren, one the daughter of her son, Joe, her name was Inez Ellen McNeil, (born in 1886). The other was the daughter of her daughter, Mary Jane McNeil KIRKHAM, her name was Hattie Kirkham (born in 1892)." The two young women in front are probably these two granddaughters.
