ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL FOOD
FESTIVAL
In 1998,
proactive and visionary Hyrum City Mayor Gordon Olson set up
citizen committees to involve concerned citizen in matters of
interest to the community. One of these citizen committees is
called Hyrum City Strength in Diversity Committee which is chaired
by local America’s Promise volunteer and Hyrum citizen, Barbara
Shidler with City Council Liason Mike Stauffer.
In recent years
the focus of the committee has been to integrate the local Latino
population into the community and schools and to foster an
atmosphere where all cultures can learn from and appreciate each
other.
The Strength in
Diversity Committee seeks to partnership with other organizations
and individuals with the same objectives, for example: USU Spanish Ambassadors, Local
Americorps Promise Fellows, USU Multicultural Student Services, and local PTAs to name a few. We have
assisted in providing translators for parent teacher conferences,
having floats representing our community’s diversity in the July 4th
parade, and hosting 2 successful Latino Family Outreach/Halloween
Parties.
In an important
effort to involve local leadership (Juan Luna, Antonio Arce,
and Isaias Lopez) to share their culture, as well as
inviting all other cultures and nationalities with the community,
we hosted the 1st International Food and Art Festival
in April of 2002.
Saturday, June
21, 2003, the Strength in Diversity Committee will host the 2nd
International Food Festival on Hyrum City Square. We invite all
to come and participate.
