These primitive-looking creatures can get quite large as lizards go, reaching about four to five feet in length. They posess strong jaws and tails, and will use them if cornered. They prefer, however, to run off into the brush to escape danger.
If approached with caution you can get within 10 - 15 feet, enough to get a decent photograph. If you have a telephoto lens, even better! Note the heavy jowls, thick facial ridges and large spikes protecting the head of this male:
