The survey has determined that an eighty (80) percent majority of the members of the organization have available Internet connections. The bulk of these people who have access connect to the Internet in their homes, other venues for Internet surfing are the school and internet cafes. The frequency of their visits to the Internet and checking of e-mail vary from once a day to once a week.
A majority of the members of the organization are familiar with the mailing list technology and several are members of other mailing lists. According to the moderator, membership to the mailing list, while this study was being conducted, was roughly seventy (70) percent. One hundred thirty eight of two hundred invited POLISCY members are members of the list.
In terms of preference, seventy-five (75) percent of the members prefer to receive their announcements via e-mail, five percent refused to make any opinions, four respondents preferred to read announcements from posters rather than e-mail. In terms of interaction, eighty-five (85) percent of the respondents say that they feel comfortable discussing issues via the mailing list. However, five (5) percent of the respondents say that the discussion group is not an good way of communicating from officers to members, and fifteen (15) percent of the respondents feel that the mailing list is not a good way of interacting with other members, and prefer personal interaction.
Observations made on the activity of the list show that an average of five (5) messages are exchanged in a day, and roughly twenty people participate in the discussion. Content analysis of the messages sent to the list reveal that list members discuss issues related to the organization and its various concerns.
