Conclusion and Recommendations

The researchers of this study conclude that the use of the mailing list has helped the operations of the organization. It has provided a means by which officers can communicate with the members of the organization, and vice versa. Similarly, it provides the members a medium with which they can communicate with one another on current affairs and issues. Although it may have produced some undesirable effects as seen in the views and opinions some members, the mailing list has contributed positively to the improvement of the operations for the organization.

Because some imperfections exist in every situation, the researchers have made some recommendations that the officers must look into to make the technology more efficient in servicing their needs as an organization. The first is that they must find ways to provide some members access to the Internet. Some courses of action may be to provide computer terminals for organization members at the Council of Student Organizations office or the Political Science Department where the students can check their mail for important messages from the mailing list.

Second is that the officers must encourage POLISCY members who aren’t on the mailing list to subscribe to the mailing list, so as to increase the efficiency of the list in disseminating information to the members of the organization, as well as increase the number of members who will be interacting with one another.

Third is that the officers of the organization should stimulate and facilitate the discussion that takes place by providing discussion guides regularly, or starting discussions themselves. This not only encourages members to interact more, but may also help other members who are uncomfortable with discussing via the mailing list react or respond more easily.

Finally, the moderator must not be lax in notifying the people who send unsolicited mail or forwarded messages to the list. This is often irritating about a mailing list and to prevent list members from getting out of the list, the moderator must control the influx of junk mail into the list.
