Song

The molten metal within my head
Heats up, bubbles and boils over
A craftsman shapes it into replicas of Greek sculptures
Into cars carrying people across the continent
Into air conditioning to make breathing easier
Into escalators reaching ever higher
Into beams connecting the I and the You.

I run high on molecules
High on spring breeze
High on butterflies
High on eros
High on interaction of man and woman
High on the flowers that adorn the border between life and death.

In the kaleidoscopic commingling of time and matter
In the din of multiple conversations, carried on radio waves and
in houses and on the streets
In the universal yearning for affection and understanding
In the items of thought, scribbled on notebook pages and typed into
computers and lining the bookshelves
In the political process, shouting the message through noise and
through character assassination
In business, bringing the produce to the consumer and consumer to the producer
In psychological examination of the emotions
In scientific analysis of the cosmos
In sermons about salvation and resurrection
In man and woman embracing on ocean beach
Is manifestation of life and death.

I run through the grass high on energy of the cosmos
I play with cardinals and with squirrels
I share poetry with ones who listen
I follow in footsteps of the enlightened
I bare my heart.

Am I the lizard king? Can I do everything?
I do what I can, my heart runneth over
As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
And scale the house of God
The peak of ecstasy
The Mount Kilimanjaro of exhaltation amid the scorching Africa of my
mind.

Run rabbit run
Pursue the ecosystemic wisdom of nature
The invisible hand perfecting the biosphere through manipulation of
selfish genes
The pure forms merging and self-refining
The recombination of nucleic acids into awakened life.

I feel, yearn, think, replenish.
I exhalt ones that inspire me
I am invigorated by contact with beautiful souls
And create a product through our creative commingling that is greater
than sum of its parts.

I sing the glory of love
The alchemy that turns mindmatter to pure gold
And shapes it into cupolas
Adorning the house of God.

I sing the majesty of the universe
The warm sky above me, the star-drenched cosmos behind it,
The quasars that are potential galaxies and the black holes around
which revolve billions of stars
The cosmic nebulas
The rhythms of neutron stars
The humming of condensed matter
The delicacy of Planet Earth.

Life I sing and death too
The joyous heartbreak and ecstatic agony of the living
The struggle eternal for immortality
The struggle eternal for resurrection and reincarnation
The struggle eternal to reproduce and to leave behind legacy
The battle between creativity of the universe and constraints of time
and matter
The chiseling into perfection of millions of forms.

I study the consciousness of man
The speck of mindmatter that feels in itself the center of the universe
That can imagine eternity of the future but not of the past
That feels itself to embody forever
But contains only the eternal forces, of life and of death,
That run through all creatures and are by them temporarily manifested.

Will you live for me? I will live for you
My beloved one
Praising you and celebrating you in verse
Writing philosophy that justifies you
Changing the culture to make the magnificence and delicacy you embody
allowed to all.
You said it would do you no good if I died for you
But to live for you - that is an honor.

I sing of love
I sing of passion and ecstatic longing
I sing of love
The merger of souls and their feverish recombination
The transmutation of mind and spirit, the inspiration of the beloved,
The commingling of heart and mind and their passionate realignment.

I am a poet of nature, I am a poet of God
I am a poet of the magnificent woman who contains in herself the
glorious consummation of efforts of both.
My love is an act of piety, an act of admiring the creative universe
My love is an act of realism, respecting the most magnificent real-
world being that exists
My love is an act of appreciation, thanking the family and the nation
for having raised such a person
My love is an act of honor, demanding the actions worthy of what I
feel.

I sing God, I sing nature, I sing the beloved.
I give of my soul, I give of my words.
May the boundless joy that I feel be made real in inspiration.
May the flowers on the border of life and death enrich lives with their
intensity.
May others feel the ecstasy of the awakened living.
May love manifest around the world and live long.
