Language Arts

Read books about Valentines Day found at the library or bookstore.
Grades K-4
Talk to your children about Thanking people and about who they don't think about thanking every day. Discuss how they feel when someone tells them "Thank YOU'.
Cut out a large heart on white or colored paper and have the child(ren) write or help them to write a special message to someone. Then have them illustrate the card for that person. If children have difficulty thinking of someone who they don't often thank, you might suggest people in the community: Librarian, Police man, mail person and other people we see every day.
Write a book about Valentines day or a make believe story.
Spelling: Use words for Valentines day. Examples: heart, arrow, love, hug, sweet depending on level of child.

Geography

Elementary grades:
Take a map of the U.S. and ask the children to look for the state that looks like a heart. Have the children draw an outline of the US with the state like a heart (Ohio) colored in. Have the children name the Capital, the state bird and other interesting facts. Write them on paper. This drawing of the map with Ohio colored in could also be given as a card to someone special.
Have the children look on the world map to see if they can find anything else that reminds them of valenintes day. A country, state or county that looks like a heart? A river straight as an arrow? Have the children make other suggestions.

Science
