      Serving the
 Community

This Temple project will uplift poverty-stricken women and children from Killankulam
Village, a forgotten village in Madurai Dist, South India. The Temple project
will bring a new hope of life to the village now while the project is being
established, but for years to come.
The children at this village like many others have five different grades of
students studying in the same classroom, often with only one or two teachers.

About 30 women in the village of Killankulam have found a glimmer of
independence through the first phase of our building project. This offers
income and a break from the cycle of gender discrimination. The project until
now has been funded by the income that our Master derives from his work, and
as he is busy with the project, the funds are drying up, as such, we need
  donations.

"In India, women suffer the most. They rely first on their parents or their
brothers and then their husbands," said Sister Isabel, a Spaniard who
launched the Creative Handicraft project in 1984.

"When a couple only have girls as children, it's seen as a tragedy: When the
husband leaves they become homeless and no one to turn too. I wanted to
build something for those women." Sri Param Eswaran

"To offer a salary to women so that they don't hesitate to send their children
to school, who otherwise end up working as agriculture labors from a very
  young age."

The dowry system is a key obstacle that permeates Indian society.

In India, it's the woman’s family who has to pay dowry, but they don't always
have the means. This places them is poverty line.

In this village most of the husband's jobs are unstable as such it is
important that women here and many other such villages as Killankulam, have
been forgotten by society and the government, thus they will continue to be
forgotten generation after generation as it has been with previous
generations. For this reason IFC Temple of Divine Love has chosen to put all
it income to help this society. We sincerely hope that all those who read
the page will help us by sending donations

We would like to see that all the women in this village earn at least 1,300
rupees, or about US$29, a significant sum for a woman in a Village. In
addition, we like to spend at least US$11 monthly per student, towards their
  education, food, clothing and health.

For the children of the village we will like to build four classrooms @ rupees
  200,000.00 US$4.430.00 for each classroom.

 Activities room for women
Shelter for women, 2394.19 sft at the cost of rupees 921,750.00 or US$
20,400.0 and will house 28 women

Decent Employment for Women in Killankulam Project – South India

The majority of women in both rural of India are employed in the informal
sector, which is characterized by low productivity, minimal incomes, and a
lack of economic and social security. In rural areas, 87 per cent of women are
employed in agriculture as laborers, cultivators, building and construction. A
worrisome trend is the increasing informality of women’s employment in all
sectors and most regions. Labor laws are difficult to impose in the informal
sector, particularly when the workers lack the ability to effectively
  organize.

The objective of our program is to improve the employability of women by
educating them, and creating opportunities of self-employment

As a first step towards achieving this objective, the program will focus on
income earning opportunities for women. As Killankulam women have worked as
cultivators, we will be funding 8 acres of land for agriculture, out of the 10
acres owned by our Master Sri Param Eswaran.

We will also provide women’s access to training for decent employment in the
  informal sector:

 • The first step is to improve the way young women in the village see
themselves. An empowerment and cultural education program, so that these women
can assimilate well with their women in the urban areas.

 • To make available information on workers’ rights, occupational safety and
health, and life skills for women

 • Help delivery of training to at least 200 women of the Village through the
Regional Vocational Training Institutes and Industrial Training Institutes.

The program intents to promote empowerment and access to training and
employment of women in Killankulam and near by villages. Existing
socio-cultural constraints may have a strong impact on the process of equal
employment opportunities offered by the project. The current low educational
and skill levels of many women from the villagers around Killankulam has an
endemic poverty which is increasingly female, show the complexity of the
problem faced by the Villagers to alleviate poverty and remove inequality
based on caste, class and gender.
Empowered the villagers and mainly the next generation will help to change the
way they think thus improving the opportunity to sustainable employment and
that their families and children truly benefit.

The first step, which will be taken as of April 21, 2004, will be:
 1. Meeting the nutritional needs of the family, through organic vegetable
  diet.

 2. Keeping the environment (including the soil) clean and healthy.

 3. Positive empowerment of the women of the villages, through income
 generating agricultural product selling activities.

 4. Use compost production and vegetable selling activities as a means to
educate their teenagers through "hands-on" work-experience.

About soil health and thereby nutritious vegetable, organic and permaculture
farming etc. Demonstrate the efficiency and advantage of organic and
permaculture farming and how to avoid chemicals and pesticides in agriculture.
 .
IFC Temple of Divine Love was first formed in Australia where our Master Sri
Param Eswaran since 1976 was involved in the Alternative health activities
across the major cities. In 2003, he decided to take his work to India, where
he acquired 10 acres of land, at Killankulam Village, Periyur Taluk, Madurai
Dist, South India. Now we have IFC Temple of Divine Love in India and the
Netherlands, and we hope to spread our work around the globe.
