Transportation to Yogyakarta

Air transportation is the easiest and fastest means of travel to and from Yogyakarta. Scheduled air services are available on a daily basis to/from Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya and Mataram (Lombok) by various airlines. Train services are only available throughout Java and part of Sumatra. Several trains run between Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Solo and offer a variety of classes including an air-conditioned carriage known as "Executive" class. The most comfortable trains are the air-conditioned "Dwi Pangga", "Argo Lawu", "Argo Wilis", "Bima", "Tatsaka", and "Turangga", which pass through Yogyakarta from Jakarta, Bandung or Surabaya, both travel at night. It takes about 6 hours to get to Yogyakarta by train from Jakarta, the cost is about $20. Other trains, "Senja Utama" and "Fajar Utama" are express service from Jakarta to Yogyakarta; cost is cheaper but no air-conditioning. If you are planning to travel by train in the weekend, you should have booked at least two days before; unless you will not get a seat.

Bus services are widely available and best known are those long-distance, express buses serving the Yogyakarta-Bali-Mataram route, and the Yogyakarta-Jakarta-Medan route.

Motorcycles are also available for rent on a daily or weekly basis. Insurance is usually covered in the rate but please be careful, as the city is full of students on motorcycles, often driving with little regard for the rules of traffic. Wearing motorcycle helmet is compulsory in Indonesia and you can be fined if you do not.
