Sri Darbar Sahib also called Golden Temple and also known as Harmandir Sahib, HARI means GOD and MANDIR means TEMPLE, which means GOD'S TEMPLE.

The idea to construct Sri Harmandir Sahib, a central place for Sikhs to worship was given and designed by fifth guru of Sikhs, Guru Arjan Dev Ji.

The holy tank, (Amrit Sarovar) was built by Guru Ramdas ji under the suprevision of Baba Budha ji.

The foundation of Sri Harmandir Sahib was laid by a muslim saint Hazrat Mian Mir ji of Lahore on 1st of Magh, 1644 Bikrmi Samvat(December,1588).

The construction was supervised by Guru Arjan Sahib himself.

The design of Golden Temple is such that it is opened from four sides, making it accessible to people of all caste, creeds, sex, and religion, without any distinction.

After the completion of the building in 1601 A.D. on Bhadoon Sudi 1st, 1661 Bikrmi Samvat(August/ September,1604), and Placement of newly created Guru Granth Sahib, Baba Budha ji wasappointed the first Granthi (the reader of Guru Granth Sahib).
