The
word Ayurveda refers to a combination of two literal words, the
word 'ayur` meaning 'containing life' & the word 'veda' meaning
'to know about it'.
Ayurveda means the "science of life". It originated
in India more than 5,000 years back and is believed to be the
oldest healing Science in existence, from which all other systems
emerged. Pronounced "Aa-your-vay-da", it is an ancient
healing system which has three main focuses:
-
Healing
illness
-
Prevention
of disease and
Longevity
or age reversal.
Ayurveda gives a divine prevention from
diseases and a holy contentment to the life of an individual .
In short, Ayurveda simply explains the laws of nature that cause
health or disease. The first cause of illness is said to be the
loss of faith in the divine or experiencing a spiritual lacking.
From here illness develops due to internal conditions (e.g., food
and liquids) or external conditions (e.g., seasons, lifestyle).
The
main factors that cause poor health (also described as imbalance)
are:
-
poor digestion and
-
Weak immune
systems.
Ayurveda
is considered to be the most unique system of pious prevention to
diseases as
|

|
-
It looks at people as individuals not as generic groups.
-
It heals the disease from the root itself & not only by
symptoms
-
It offers natural therapies only
by which the chances of
side effects are reduced.
-
It offers inexpensive & effective solutions.
The
theory behind the Ayurveda involved millions of years of study
& dedication.
According to this theory; the life of an individual is considered
to be a combination of three elements such as Air, Water and Fire.
All the individuals are prone to either of these constituents
& develop themselves accordingly.
The persons having air constitution are said to have Vayu Dosha
due to which they are thin & bony .The balanced air constitution
leads to creativity, adaptability and no physical health concerns.
The excess of air includes fear, worry, anxiety and nervousness.
Physically it leads to dry skin, gas & constipation. Ayurveda
notes that certain foods increase air and other foods reduce air.
In general, excess air is reduced by eating cooked or steamed
foods, and eating every three or four hours. Foods like carrots,
rice and moong beans reduce excess air.
The persons having fire constitution are said to have Pitta Dosh
& tend towards more of heat & warmth. The balanced fire
constitution leads to strength, commanding capacity & goal
oriented people. If the constitution is imbalanced it leads to
hot temperament & irritability; Physically it develops heat
related disorders such as acne, rashes, diarrhea, ulcers, toxic
blood, liver, kidney, gall bladder, heart and spleen disorders.
The persons having water constitution are said to have Kapha
Dosh.
The people having this constitution tend to possess excess water.
The balanced water constitution leads to strong, muscular, calm
& loyal people. The imbalance makes a person lethargic or
greedy in nature; Physically they develop congestion
Ayurveda
gives 5 main therapies to prevent the various diseases:
 |
TASTE: By having Herbs & proper balanced nutrition
the diseases can be prevented. |
 |
TOUCH: The touch therapy involves applying massage
(abhyanga),
yoga and exercise.
SMELL: Aromatherapy gives a better prevention. |
 |
SIGHT: Colour therapy. By having a look at the varied natural
sights, different colours and the environmental pictures. |
 |
HEARING:
Music therapy, mantra meditation, chanting. Spiritual
therapies include meditation, living ethically, and working in
a career that one loves or is purposeful. |
Ayurveda
offers therapies for each of the five senses because different people
learn better through different senses. Thus according to Ayurveda health
is maintained by keeping a balance of the constituents. Balancing
produces healing, prevention, and reverses the ageing process.
Thus many uncomfortable conditions such as stress, anxiety, fatigue,
depression and weight problems can be corrected by simple and natural
ways through Ayurvedic procedures.
Ayurveda provides a clear, concise, cohesive procedure to help people
restore balance and health in their mind and body in a natural way. Yet
it is much more than just a very effective holistic treatments. Ayurveda,
literally "Science of Life", provides a complete system of
preventive medicine and health care which has proven its effectiveness .
Consultation
and treatment in Ayurveda:-
Treatment
in Ayurveda is a two pronged process. One involving actual
treatment.
The other-the more important- a life style consultation. Followed
by a cleansing of the mind and body, which then has to be
maintained by the individual for the treatment to be effective.Every person is understood to be 3 dimensional. I.e. comprised of
body, mind and soul. And these 3 dimensions are set in an
individualised pattern based on the predominant dosha (i.e.
Prakruti).
|

|
An imbalance in any one of these dimensions leads to
" ill-being" (vikruti). It is only after a detailed
consultation, that the physician determines the cause of this imbalance. Using the 3 ancient techniques of observation
(Darsana), touching/ feeling (Sparsana) and interrogation (Prasna).
After which the patient is given a description of what he might
expect to undergo over the next few days/weeks.
|
Actual
Treatments :-
 |
Abhyanga:
or conventional oil therapy. Where the
medicated oils are gently applied over the body. To alleviate
fatigue, delay aging, improve sleep, etc. |
 |
Swedana:
A mind fomentation procedure (using a cloth dipped in hot
water). |
 |
Nasya:
Is an instilling of 2 drops of oil in the nose just before
inhalation. |
 |
Gandoosha:
Or gargling lasts 5 minutes using different kind of liquids
(depending on each individual's needs). |
 |
Danta
Dhavana: 5 minutes of teeth cleaning with a herbal powder
so as to prevent infections. |
 |
Anjana:
Is the lining of the rims of the eye with an anti-infection
paste for 5 minutes. To improve eyesight and delay cataract formation. |
 |
Karnapoorana: Is the pouring of 2-4 drops of medicated
oil in each ear for 5 minutes. To protect the ears from infection. |
 |
Snana:
Or a bath with herbal powders is administered at the end of
each session.
The first treatment session (including consultation) takes up
to 3 hours. Subsequent session take approximately 90 minutes. |
Dhara:-
Is a treatment process where the patient is made to lie
on a special wooden bed (a droni) after which, the
medicated oil/ milk/ buttermilk etc. are poured in a
prescribed, continuous stream on his head by the
therapist. Who is assisted in this treatment by other
therapists, who help with the oil application over the
patient's body.
For the oil application on the head, a wide-mouthed
earthen vessel with a hole at the bottom is hung about 2
inches from the patient's forehead. A thread hangs forth
from the hole along which the oil flows. The liquid is
then poured into the vessel and on the upper forehead in
a steady stream.
|

|
The liquid drippings are collected and
the oil is poured back into the vessel. After which the
patient is given a warm water bath or sometimes none at
all (with the patient simply being towelled off). This treatment continues depending on the severity of
each case. In order to alleviate fatigue, improve
memory, restore equilibrium. And be effective in cases
involving insomnia, migraines, ear-nose diseases,
spondilitis, paraplegia.
|
Pizhichil:-
Is a specialized treatment, meaning the squeezing of a cloth
soaked in oil over the body.During this treatment the patient is made to sit on the droni
and the medicated oils are then administered over the head and
body. By 4 therapists (2 on either side of the patient i.e. if the dhara treatment is also undertaken simultaneously).A
cloth is tied over the patient's forehead,to prevent the oil
from getting into the eyes. The warm medicated oil is then
poured in a continually flowing single stream,by squeezing a
clean cloth dipped in oil over the body. The treatment starts
and ends with the patient in a sitting position. In the
duration in between, the patient is made to lie flat.

|
Like
with Dhara, the duration and bathing processes vary with
each patient. The pizhichil oil therapy helps alleviate
skeletal and muscular diseases rheumatoid arthritis,
osteoarthritis, lumbago, sciatica, hemiplegia,
neuropathy, etc.
It is important to note however, that because Ayurveda
is tailor made to suit each individual and his typical
ailment, certain treatments might not be administered to
him. As per doctor's orders of course.
