When you here of Undead
tactics, you instantly think of powerful magic
spells and combat monsters like Vampires and
Zombie Dragons. Well, I am here to tell you
different.
Without a doubt, the Undead do rely on their
generals more than other armies, without it your
army would crumble to dust. I like to choose a
necrach vampire count, with the Curse of the
Revenant and the Forbidden Lore. If I was using
magic items I would give him a Blade of Leping
Bronze to give him more attacks. This is cheaper
than a basic Vampire Lord (275pts) and allows
more points to be spent on Skeletons and Zombies.
The other characters I take are a Necromancer
Master, for recasting spells, and wraiths to lead
my units.
When choosing troops, I try to take a balance
between Zombies and Skeletons. I take Skeleton in
units of thirty, give them shields and spears
plus a standard and musician. Add a character and
the ability to cause fear, and you have quite a
powerful regiment of troops. I take Zombies for
sheer numbers. 40, including a wraith and the
Vampire Count. In combination with the Skeleton
they are terrifying (literally!) Whilst these
troops hold the centre (usually with another unit
of skeletons if points allow) I have complete
different flanks. One flank is fast and contains
the Black Coach and some Mounted Wights. The
other flank is held steady by a mix of bat swarms
and spirit hosts. Whilst this happen the Vampie
Bats fly high and take on war machines. This is
my usual tactic, and works fairly well.
When choosing magic standards, my first choice
would be a Banner of Sorcery for the unit with
the Necromancer. I am also fond of things like
the Banner of doom and the Hell Banner (but NOT
in the same unit) as this reduces enemys
leadership. In my terms, an army standard bearer
for the undead is a bit pointless, as most troops
are immune to break tests any way.
