History In Fall 2003, Judith Osbual was the Alumni Secretary for the Alpha Phi Omega, Gamma Beta Chapter at San Jose State University. When I joined the Alumni Committee, it consisted of Judith, Ernie, Phi, Houng, Sharon , Isma, and I. Nino and Judith's cute little sister also contributed later. We spent many long nights at Judith and Phi's apartment (they name it "12th Wonder") planning Alumni Night. Isma went to Costco to buy and cook food, Phi made contacts, Ernie obtained alumni information, Sharon did addresses, Judith set the program and edited the alumni newsletter, and I, well, made phone calls and provided back up support for the secretary, such as going to the A.S. Print Shop and spending 26 dollars of my own money make copies of the newsletter. I did not ask for compensation partly because I was too lazy to ask for it, partly because I wanted to contribute to the alumni budget, and partly because It would take a very long time to get the money back. Isma also bought the food at her own expense.Days of effort resulted into the Sixth Semi-Annual Alumni Night on November 28, 2003. It was interesting to see former members of the club of various ages in one room. Judith programmed a tardy but informative show. Everyone had a good chance to learn about the alumni present. The Milpitas clubhouse was difficult to find and our parking was threatened by citations and tow trucks. Richwood's vehicle suffered damages. Fortunately, the alumni's achievements inspired Richwood to create a legacy that will survive future generations. With that in mind, he sought to become the next Alumni Secretary with Phi. In Spring 2004, Phi and I remained in the Alumni Committee as others replaced the ranks. they were Richwood, Reed (who attended the past Alumni Night) Mike Huen, and Christina Bose. This group was a little more interactive than the previous one probably because they had more spare time to meet together. Richwood was the executive and Phi was his left-hand woman making the connections and completing the schedule. Generally, we all were assigned roles and shared some tasks. Richwood assembled the newsletter and encourage The Seventh Semi-Annual Alumni Night was on March 13 at the University Room at SJSU. The attendance was higher than last semester, partly because of the proximity and partly because of Angelique's enthusiasm to rally the pledges there. Spartan Shops catered the event (because we had no choice) and the MOSAIC Cross-Cultural Center helped sponsor the event. Mike Huen was the Master of Ceremony (which he likes to brag about). For details, I wrote an account of that event here in Return of the Alumni. At the end of the Spring Semester, Phi and Richwood's tenure came to an end and both declined a re-nomination. When Richwood nominated me to succeed him, he did it for a reason. It was not like he opened his black book and randomly picked my name out of it. After all I went through, I was not surprised that I would obtain this position. Mike Huen and Christina Bose were nominated as well, but both declined a nomination. Thus I ran unchallenged. Like all officers, we had to make a one minute speech on why they should be elected. My speech was very unusual and certainly was the highlight for some people during that prolonged election night. In honor of the electorate, I will not publish the speech. All I can say is that it was really cool. With confidence from the vast majority, I won the election. Now I am out to prove those 5 or so dissenters wrong. This should be fun. Memos
