Kenneth Cheung's Alpha Phi Omega Universe
The 65th Anniversary
Report
Part 1: Prologue
As all members were taught during their pledging process, the service fraternity of Alpha Phi Omega was founded by Frank Reed Horton on
December 16, 1925. With its high standard of manhood and service unprecedented in the Greek system. The organization spread throughout the country and established itself in San Jose State University on December 6, 1939, and the Gamma Beta Chapter was born.
In 1990, the alumni of the A Phi O GB chapter held a reunion celebrating the the 50th Anniversary in the spring. About 90-100 people participated in this event bringing together members of each decade of the fraternity's history. It was the largest event in the chapter's history. and took many years of planning to make it happen.
The Alpha Phi Omega, Gamma Beta Chapter's
declined in membership in 1997 due to complicated internal disputes and the organization on the verge of collapse.
Throughout this dark period in the chapter's history, the most dedicated and
enduring brother, Ernie Manfredini, kept the charter active. The chapter's 60th
anniversary gave the fraternity added strength and triggered a sequence of
events that allow the group to rise again. Then, In Fall 2001, a new generation arrived to
join Alpha Phi Omega. This led to the birth of the modern families in the
fraternity (you could read about the Origin
of Family Names on the http://aphiogb.org
website).
Thus, the 65th Anniversary became the
5th Anniversary of the turning point that began the rebirth of the Gamma Beta
Chapter. Ever since the Fall of 2001, the 65th Anniversary has been a much
anticipated event, largely promoted by the wise advisor Dwayne Hearn.
