I am the owner of a satellite receiver and, although I never understood why I was paying "Cable & Wireless" for a service that they are not providing, I have been paying its licence since the day I bought it.
When Malta joined the European Union, there was hearsay that, in accordance with EU regulations, this licence fee will have to stop being collected. Can you please tell me (and all satellite receiver owners in Malta) what is the truth?
As you may very well understand, although I am looking after my own interests, there are many satellite receiver owners in Malta who are encountering the same problem. I think that I can confidently say that all of them would be very happy to get rid of this unjust fee, especially since, as it seems, according to the EU, we are being discriminated against.
Since we are being made to pay for nothing, I think that this is a consumer issue. I urge you to treat this matter as urgent because currently "Cable & Wireless" are handing out bills.
Thanks. (Ray Ellul)
As we continue with our letter-a-week campaign, I urge you, dear readers, to continue sending in meaningful letters on the issue so that we can keep the campaign going for as long as it takes to rectify the situation.
Regarding letters sent in Maltese, which obviously would have to be translated for publication, I must make it clear that these will only be published if we run out of letters written in English.
At this point in our campaign we have some good news. As regular readers know, before embarking on this EU-related campaign, I consulted Dr Simon Busuttil, who informed me that, "this licence fee cannot be retained because it is incompatible with EU Law. I made these submissions to Government to this effect", and he confirmed it in writing.
On week 1 of this campaign I wrote that if there is one person in Malta who knows all about EU Laws, it is Dr Busuttil and I added: "As can be seen, with him as our EU representative, we can rest assured that our European legal rights will definitely be protected.
"Indeed, it is in our interest to have him as our MEP and I trust him so much that I will be voting for him on June 12. Indeed, if we want to maximise on our EU Membership, we need him to be there for us consumers."
Well, at this point I am very pleased to inform that Dr Busuttil is willing to make a legal submission in Court by providing legal representation, free of charge, to any consumer against whom the Government may take legal action for having refused to pay the Satellite Dish Tax. Yes, most definitely, he is proving to be worthy of our trust, our confidence and our votes.
In the prevailing scenario the only thing that would end this campaign is the removal of the illegal Satellite Dish Tax.
