THE 5 W's (and more...)

Sometimes its easier to think about questions using the 5 W's.  The chart below describes the kind of information each of these questions will generate.  (Notice some other key question types have been included).

Type of Question

Information it Will Provide

Who

The name of a person or number of people
eg  Who invented electricity?

What

A description of an event, fact or details of something.
eg  What causes acid rain?
 What sort of animal is a whale?

When

The time of an event or a date?
eg When did Madame Curie make her most important discovery?

Where

The location of a place, object or event
eg  Where can you find the Western Swamp tortoise?

Why

The reason or cause for something happening
eg  Why did Simpson and his donkey become so famous?

What if...

A prediction of what might happen.
eg  What if there was a major chemical spill in the Swan River?

How

An explanation of a process
eg How have farms changed since Mediaeval times?
