A.   Focus question: What does the  Blue Tongue Lizard eat?

B.    I photocopied 3 different sources of information on the Blue Tongue Lizard.

C.   Students each have a copy of the three sources and highlight only key words related to the lizard’s diet.

D.   Key words and phrases are copied from the texts in students’ pads – I get my students to write in a 6 cm margin.

E.    Remove the 3 sources- students need to rely on the key word to trigger their memory recall of what they have read. Key words are written into sentences. Students revise and edit work to produce a well written paragraph about the Diet of the Blue Tongued Lizard.

Follow this process with another Focus Question. Teachers may need to model this strategy several times. It is an excellent reading activity and could be done in Language time as well as S& E or Science.

Please note: some students may need to know what constitutes a good key word e.g., nouns, verbs (sometimes adjectives).
