Terms (continued)
Greenhouse effect - the warming of the earth’s atmosphere.
Incineration - the burning of household or industrial waste in a combustion chamber.
Inspection and maintenance (I/M) program -a motor vehicle inspection program implemented by California to identify maintenance needs and assure effective emission control.
Inversion - a layer of warm air in the atmosphere that overlies a layer of cooler air, trapping pollutants in the warm air layer.
Opacity -amount of light obscured by particle pollution in the atmosphere.
Oxidant -an air pollutant such as ozone which is a primary component of smog.
Photochemical reaction -chemical reaction brought about by light energy of the sun.
Reacive Organic Gas(ROG) -also known as Non-methane organic compounds (NMOC), a gas that contributes to smog formation.
Reid vapor pressure(RVP) -vapor pressure of gasoline with the higher number reflecting more evaporation.
Ringelmann chart -a series of charts numbered 0 to 5 that simulate various smoke densities.
Total Organic Gases(TOG) -gaseous organic gases (including ROG) and methane.
Total Suspended Particulate(TSP) - particles up to approx. 30 microns in size (soot, dust, etc).
Volatile organic compounds (VOC) -carbon-containing compounds (gasoline, alcohol, etc.) that evaporate into the air and contributes to smog formation and themselves are toxic.
