Additional Terms
Abatement -the reduction in degree or intensity (or elimination) of pollution.
Acid rain - rain with nitric and sulfuric acid components which are formed by combination of nitrogen and sulfur oxides with water vapor in the atmosphere.
Adverse health effect -a health effect from exposure to air contaminants that may range from mild conditions (eye/throat irritation) to serious conditions(such as birth defects, cancer).
Aerosol -particles of solid or liquid matter that remains suspended in air because of their extremely small size and light weight.
Afterburner -an air pollution abatement device that removes undesirable organic gases thru incineration.
Air shed - a geographical area that shares the same air due to topography, meteorology, and climate.
Aromatic -a type of hydrocarbon, such as benzene or toluene, added to gasoline in order to increase octane. Some aromatics are toxic (e.g. 1,3-butadiene).
Catalyst - substance used in catalytic converters that can increase or decrease the rate of a chemical reaction between the other chemical species without being consumed in the process.
Criteria air pollutant -an air pollutant for which acceptable levels of exposure can be deter-mined and for which an ambient air quality standard has been set (e.g. ozone, CO, PM10).
Emission inventory -an estimate of the amount of pollutants emitted into the atmosphere from mobile, stationary, and natural source categories over a specified period of time.
