Alchasay Highschool, WhiteRiver AZ It was a typical day at the school where numerous construction workers worked. The electrician was bust sorting out wires, the painter was painting door frames and the tile setter was setting tile on the bathroom floors. The bathroom where the tile setter worked was part of the gym and the gym was part of the high school where everyone was working. This tile setter was my dad and he had a helper helping himn that day. This helpers name was Jared. Jared was a recent arival to this country from russia and he did not know much english. It took him long periods of time to do inconsequential tasks, such as cleaning buckets. Also if a job was not to his liking he would not do it at all. Consequentially he was paid only $3 an hour. This was a school day and students had been coming in and out all day long. They admired the work being done to their school and moved on to their classes. This particular day Jared had been more stubbern than usuel and was deciding that more and more tasks were not to his liking. particualy womans work, like washing the floor. Jared decided to take a break from the strenuous job of watching someone else wash the floor and strapped on his roller blades for a quick jaunt around the school. Twenty minutes he was back, but still taking his break. While resting from his rolerblading excursion he happened to see upon the wall a small red box that had the letters I-N C-A-S-E O-F F-I-R-E P-U-S-H I-N A-N-D P-U-L-L D-O-W-N. Jared had no idea what the meaning of the english letters ment so he figured he would have to find out himself, without asking what it was. Luckily shcool had let out by this time and there was noone in the building but constuction and janitorial workers. When the bells started to ring and the lights went off people came running from all ofer to see what the problem was. The janitors quickly went to the office to talk to the security people and tell them that there was no fire. After assuring the security company they tried to find a way to turn the alarm off. Nobody knew how, and the only person who did know how was the principal, who had already gone home for a relaxing 3 day weekend after a hectic school week. The janitors called the principal who reluctantly agreed to come and turn off the alarm. Forty-five minutes had passed from the time Jared had pulled the alarm and the time the principal had shut it off. Fortunately this was the second to last day before all the tile was finished. The irritated workers finaly had their peace. |
