51.  Bates, Mary (Marshall), "Electronic," William R. Rogers (widower) married Mary M.Mc Kenzie at Half Island Cove. According to his daughter Matilda Adeline's birth record, William and Mary's year of marriage was listed as 1854. I question that! A daughter Susanna was born in 1851. According to the 1871 Census index, page 66, Mary's age was 43. There isquite a space between two of the children; Susan age 17 and John age 10.  Maybe Lydia Rhynold in William's household was married daughter Lydia Rogers Rhynold.

Dobson (maiden name Schrieder) died April 21, 1887; her age was given as 67 yrs. 6 months, which would make her date of birth October 1819. / (3)  On July 29, 1999 Les Cameron sent us an e-mail concerning Mary's birth: "Christ Church Baptismal Records, LDS microfilm 1378473  (My recollection this was from a transcribed typescript rather than original) Shrader, Mary, d. of George and Susanna b. Oct. 13, 1819" / (4)  I have a printed copy of the Christ Church Baptismal Records in front of me and it reads: "Christ Church Baptismal Records, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, LDS microfilm #1378473 - typewritten copy, "Shrades (sic), Mary, Dau. of George & Susanna. Born Oct. 6, 1817." / I had already been bothered by the October 13, 1819 date because her sister, Susanna Shreider (each child's last name was spelled differently) was born October 6, 1819.  It isn't likely that Mary was born 7 days after Susanna. / (5)  Les also had, from the Christ Church Baptismal Records: "(My recollection this was from a transcribed typescript rather than original) Shreider, Susanna, d. of George and Susanna b. Oct. 6, 1819" / My thoughts: Even though we have several sources that seem to indicate a year of birth for Mary as 1819, / (1) The typewritten Christ Church Baptismal Records show a date of birth as October 6, 1817. / (2)  Two birth listings following Mary's birth record show a child was born October 13, 1819.  Les, could you have copied that date by mistake? / (3)  Mary and Susanna can't both have been born in October 1819, especially 7 days apart. / (4)  However, there is a problem about Mary's specific age at the time of her death and on the 1871 census.

168.  Out of Gloucester, "Electronic," January 8, 1924 - Dobson Lost Life During Heavy Blizzard - Concerning the drowning of George Dobson, formerly of this port, who perished in a recent gale, the Shelburne Gazette says: The blizzard that visited this section last Friday is responsible for the taking of one life.  On that day the Lockeport fleet went out to the fishing grounds as usual, and early in the afternoon, when the storm set in there was a hurried preparation for making port.  Many of the men cut their trawls and hastened back to their vessels.  But George Dobson, one of the crew of the Nellie Viola, failed to return. The vessel searched for the missing man for some time and failing to find him, made for port and notified the Government steamer Arras at Shelburne, and she left here Saturday morning.  After searching about in the vicinity where the Nellie Viola had been fishing, she returned to port with no tidings of the missing man. On Sunday afternoon word reached Shelburne that a dory had been picked up on DeMinga Island.  The Gazette called up Jordan Bay and learned that Berton Pierce and Mark Pierce had discovered a dory carrying the name of "Nellie Viola" on the northern part of the island and also found a pair of rubber boots and a cap nearby on the beach.  There is no doubt that the dory was the one which contained Dobson.  The fact that the rubber boots were found leads to the belief that in making shore he pulled them off thinking that he would be thrown out in the surf and that he would have to swim. The unfortunate man was 58 years of age and belonged to Guysboro, but had been fishing out of Lockeport for several years.  He was a widower and leaves a grown-up family residing in the United States.
