Marshall, Steven, "Electronic," 20 Apr 2001, "I
just received a copy of a deed from the Guysborough Court House which confirms
the relationships between the HURST, DIECKHOFF and MARSHALL surnames in
Guysborough. Thanks to members on this list who first gave me the lead - the
deed does indeed contain valuable information. / The deed was dated 22 February
1792 and made between Samuel HURST, sadler of Guysborough Twp. and Harmon Andrew
DICKHOFF, farmer of Guysborough Twp. The latter's name is spelt several ways
throughout the deed - Herman, Harm, Dieckhoff, Dickoff, etc. / The deed confirms
that Elizabeth MARSHALL, wife of Herman DIECKHOFF, was the STEP DAUGHTER of
Samuel HURST.../ For DIECKHOFF researchers, this document proves that Elizabeth
MARSHALL, wife of Herman Dieckhoff, was the step-daughter of Samuel HURST. This
would imply that Samuel HURST's wife, Elizabeth, was a widow when they married
c1780 and was probably Mrs. Elizabeth MARSHALL at the time of their
marriage" [see Notes for full transcript of deed].

Feltmate, Peggy, "Electronic," 1881 Nova Scotia Census,
Guysborough County, "I looked for Mary Ann Rhynold on the 1881 census where
she would have been about 8 years old. I checked all possible spellings of
Rhynold in Mary E Koen's census transcription and index, and found the only one
close to matching was in Cape Canso: Mary A Rhinold age 5. Lo and behold she is
indeed living with a Lydia Rhinold age 32 [thus born c 1849] (Lydia is not
married apparently) and they live in the dwelling and family of William Rogers,
widower, age 72 and his four children aged 12 to 20. Next door is William and
Mary Rhinold (William age 50 and his wife Mary age 36).There is no sign of a
David Rhynold anywhere in the 1881 census, nor even a Rhynold with the initial
'D'."

Desmond, Don, "Electronic," Mon, 7 Jun 2003, Greetings!
/ I was pleased to find your website. I
commend you on you work. And, I believe that I may add to your work. / My
grandmother is Josephine Hurst. A daughter of George Hurst and Margaret
(McDonald) Hurst who you have named. / Josephine married Bernard Stephen
Desmond, of North Sydney, on August 12, 1919 in Canso. / Witnesses were Joseph
Desmond, of North Sydney and Antoinette Hurst, of Canso. / Joe is Bernard's
brother. 'Nette' is Josephine's sister. / J.W. Mac Isaac performed the Catholic
ceremony. / I have a copy of their Marriage Certificate. / Josephine and Bernard
had four children: Eileen, Roy, Mary, and Francis. / My aunt Mary, who will be
80 on June 9th of this year, is the only surviving direct descendant. / After
living in the North Sydney area for a few years after their marriage, they
settled in the Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA area. / Bernard and Josephine
passed many years ago and are buried in Mt. Auburn cemetery in Cambridge
Massachusetts. / I would be interested to know if you know of any living
descendants of George and Margaret Hurst. / I have a photograph of the 'Hurst
girls', dated about 1910 or so?, that I believe they would enjoy viewing. /
Cheers! / Don Desmond / Concord New Hampshire, USA.

Out of Gloucester, "Electronic," January 8, 1924 -
Dobson Lost Life During Heavy Blizzard - Concerning the drowning of George
Dobson, formerly of this port, who perished in a recent gale, the Shelburne
Gazette says: The blizzard that visited this section last Friday is responsible
for the taking of one life. On that day the Lockeport fleet went out to
the fishing grounds as usual, and early in the afternoon, when the storm set in
there was a hurried preparation for making port. Many of the men cut their
trawls and hastened back to their vessels. But George Dobson, one of the
crew of the Nellie Viola, failed to return. The vessel searched for the missing
man for some time and failing to find him, made for port and notified the
Government steamer Arras at Shelburne, and she left here Saturday morning.
After searching about in the vicinity where the Nellie Viola had been fishing,
she returned to port with no tidings of the missing man. On Sunday afternoon
word reached Shelburne that a dory had been picked up on DeMinga Island.
The Gazette called up Jordan Bay and learned that Berton Pierce and Mark Pierce
had discovered a dory carrying the name of "Nellie Viola" on the
northern part of the island and also found a pair of rubber boots and a cap
nearby on the beach. There is no doubt that the dory was the one which
contained Dobson. The fact that the rubber boots were found leads to the
belief that in making shore he pulled them off thinking that he would be thrown
out in the surf and that he would have to swim. The unfortunate man was 58 years
of age and belonged to Guysboro, but had been fishing out of Lockeport for
several years. He was a widower and leaves a grown-up family residing in
the United States.

have a marriage license (Methodist) for one James Adam Feltmate and Mary Ann
Rhynold that indicates Mary Ann was born c 1873 in Canso, daughter of David and
Liddie Rhynold. Both Mary Ann and James Adam were living in Canso when married.
/ Since Mary Ann Rhynold appears age 5 on the 1881 census with the apparently
unmarried Lydia Rhynold age 32, I can't help but wonder if, when Mary Ann
Rhynold married James Adam Feltmate in 1891, she said her parents were
"Lydia Rhynold and David" and it was assumed David's surname was
Rhynold too, but was actually David Dobson.
913.
Feltmate, Peggy, "Electronic," 17 Apr 2001, "Now
along comes another marriage license dated 1891 for a James Adam Feltmate age 28
(and therefore born c 1863), WIDOWER, born in Whitehead, fishing in Canso,
married at Canso to Mary Ann Rhynold, age 18 [therefore born c 1873], born and
living in Canso, daughter of David and Liddie Rhynold. This James Adam ALSO
gives his parents names as William and Catherine Feltmate. I have never found a
death date for Melinda the wife of Adam Casper, and their kids stop coming about
1887, so it seems that Adam Casper and James Adam are the same person - despite
the difference in birthdate."

or '59, died before 1936, baptised 1860 (that's where we got the birthdate as
1859), son of Catherine Dort and William Frederick Feltmate."
917.
Feltmate, Peggy, "Electronic," 17 Apr 2001, "There
is no James Adam Feltmate listed anywhere in the Guys Co 1871 census. Adam
Casper IS in the 1871 census, living with his parents, age 13 and thus born
c.1858. Adam is not a common name in the Feltmate family tree. Adam Casper and
James Adam are the only two. So for awhile I figure they are one and the same. /
In 1881 census, Adam (age 24 and therefore b. c 1857) and Melinda Feltmate and
their son William Edmond age 6 months are all living in the household of Adam's
parents Wm Frederick and Catherine (Dort) Feltmate. There is no James Adam
Feltmate listed in the 1881 census. / In the 1891 census, Adam and Melinda do
not appear, and neither does James Adam!! Nor do the children of either one of
them. / Adam Casper and Melinda do not appear in the 1901 census - BUT there is
in the 1901 census one Adam Feltmate in Canso West, b 29 Jun 1868, Baptist,
fisherman, WITH HIS WIFE ALICE b 20 Dec 1879, Baptist. Their children Freeman b
29 Aug 1882, fisherman, and Annie b 2 Jan 1893, and also mother of head of
household (that would be mother of Adam) one Elizabeth Feltmate, widow, Church
of England, born 12 Sep 1848. So here is wife Alice, not a Melinda, not a Mary
Ann. And here is a mother Elizabeth, not a mother Catherine (Dort). / So IS this
the same as the James Adam Feltmate who married Mary Ann Rhynold in 1890? That
person said his mother's name was Catherine, not Elizabeth!"
