22th July 02: 'InMe Free Gig' (InMe Gig) -Barfly @ The Monarch, London.

The Barfly Gig - Just A Laugh!

The evening began, with us & a few of the board members; Chris, Emma, Sam, Joey, Jen, Rachael, Dan, etc. meeting in 'The Witherspoon’s' -“Man in the Moon” Pub around 4-5pm ish. The doors opened at ‘the Barfly’ at 7:30, and after going to meet another couple of board members we made our way over to the gig. We entered to find the band members still in the middle of their interview with board member Jen (who had been blessed with meeting us lovelies in the pub before hand) from the looks of it all was well, apart from the loud music which was playing while she was trying to interview them. We were told that things were made better by Simon when making a joke about the way that Dave was speaking into the Dictaphone so closely. “Looks like your eating a sandwich, man”. The band departed five minutes later to prepare for the gig, which was to be held upstairs, in the small room above the bar. An extra ten minutes and we were called up, the list was read on the door, and those that were lucky enough to be on it were given free laminated picture and badges and the opportunity to buy a tee shirt!

After making our way to the front and meeting a few board members (Colette, Siobhan & co) we didn't think were coming, and claiming our spaces at the front, we settled in and occasionally catching glimpses of Simon, and Joe (while the dressing room door was open), Bex nabbing the chance to take photos of the band equipment, only to have someone take Dave's guitar before she got to the 6-stringed beauty.

The band arrived on stage, with Simon, Dave and Joe waltzing in to adjust instruments before blasting into the first song. Dave’s voice growling away to the beat of Si’s drums and the hum of Joe’s bass. Joe still in the same form as Camden, with his everlasting energy, to bounce about the stage like a rabbit on speed! The most memorable moment being when he decided to lay down, still playing, then get up in one bounce-still playing, he just didn't stay still!! Many of us were happy that Si and the drum kit were alot closer to us, much easier to get Live Images of him. He seemed happy to be closer, everytime "Si, over here" was heard the blue eyes, would fly round searching for the voice, followed by a beaming smile when his eyes spotted cameras. The 'Dave Thing' started when we, along with others notified Dave that a bra and thong had been thrown his way, his slight smile and raised eyebrows, showed he wasn't that bothered as they soon, introduced the crowd to “Neptune”, which, in Dave’s words, “this next song is dedicated to Rachel, I know you wanted to hear this babe, so here it is”. Rachel along with many others is a dedicated InMe fan, having been to several gigs, but was certain she had never once heard “Neptune” live.

The guys, were giving it their all and it was clear looking around at the crowd that energy was flying round the room. However, fans trying to get closer, and maybe the occasional few for the 'mosh pit' located near the back resulted in the fans (mostly Rachael, Bex, Lily, Jen, etc.) near the front being pushed and crushed against the stage several times. Caring smiles from Simon, and co as we continued to enjoy the gig, yelling and singing along with Dave and Joe, even when one almighty shove from some fans behind sent Jen and Bex to double up over the stage only to stand up straight again just as the edge of Joe's bass connected with Bex's face (sending a slight bit of Bex's tooth flying), and Jen's chin. After several glasses of water being passed round (thanks to Mike -who then disappeared back to the 'mosh pit') and shared between the 6 main people at the front, we were ready to continue bouncing about, shouting/yelling/singing in time with the guys, while our arms moved about making fists in the air,. The fans energy being passed on to the band, giving Dave and Joe the buzz to bounce about and Simon to really attack the drums.
The set ended with Joe running at the drum kit full tilt, Simon leaping out the way just in time, and Dave taking a step to the side as Joe landed full on in the kit. It took a shocked Si's Dad and a laughing Si to lift him out, before the band moved back into the dressing room, to have slight change of clothing, as fans caught their breath and re-grouped with their mates (Bex took this time to ask Si's Dad if it would be possible for him to get a photo of Dave's guitar, for the FanSite -he happily got the picture for us). Five minutes later, and they had re-emerged, all looking a little better, for the signings. Dave and Si looking up as they got comfy on the stage, remembering us from the Camden Gig and Jen from the interview, smiles and a quick chat along with "god, are you both ok?" and the reassurance that we were, we moved away with the promise of speaking to them later, after the signing.

The band stayed on the stage until everyone in the room (250 peeps) had had something signed. Then moved about chatting with the remaining fans, as time passed and the majority of fans had left for home, the people from MFN moved us to the bar downstairs to continue conversations and chat about the gig. The band happily called 3 lil unfortunate girls that couldn't make it (Jess -Joe Fan, Liz -Dave Fan & Lulu -Si Fan) upon finding out that Lulu was their youngest fan Si & Dave were definitely making sure they spoke to her! The girls were over the moon and upon speaking to their mother Bex got a big thank you!!

The night continued with loads of chatting, photos taken and being looked at... It was a great laugh!! Among some of the convosations, were Lily pointing out to Dave and Bex that their hair was the same colour, and telling Dave; "You hair’s all curly at the bottom, mate!" “Yea I know, cuz i don’t take care of it!" was his laughed reply. On having a long chat with Lily, Joe said “the gig was great, there was a good atmosphere and the crowd was really with us. But there was less room than at the (Camden) palace…I even managed to hit two girls over the head with my bass”, upon finding out who it was he replied “Really? Oh my god, I’m soooo sorry, I really didn’t mean to do that at all! They didn’t duck as I came round to turn the other way. Opppps, I hit them really hard didn’t I?” (despite the fact it wasn't even his fault) It was still kind of him to worry. At the end of the night, after hugs goodbye and the guys mentioning to Bex, Mike and Lily "Hope to see you at the next gig?" with a reply of "Definitely", Lily was off to get the last hug of the evening from Si, only to accidentally tread on his foot, after having a slight shove from mates to make sure she got it, upon being caught by Si, she replied; "Sorry, didn’t mean to tread on your foot", “That’s alright, happens all the time!” replies a smiling Si.

Waves from the band as we left completed the night, completely!

Then, it was off to the underground and the park.....
