A GSD doing the high jump

I have had Iris for 5 years. I got her for my birthday on October 2nd, 1998 when she was 1 1/2 years old from Felzen Haus Shepherds. Iris is small for a German Shepherd, only 63 pounds. She is a beautiful black/tan "German" German Shepherd.

Iris the whippet

On Feburary 14th and 15th 1999, Iris had a beautiful litter of 8 purebred German Shepherd puppies. (One of these days, I'll get a pic up.) There were 5 boys and 3 girls. 3 all blacks, 2 sables and 2 black and tans. Oh they were so cute! It is amazing how fast puppies grow!!!

Last year (2003), I did Iris in 4-H dog obedience in the very hard, Utility class. At the Fun Match, we qualified and Iris did a beautiful job. However, at the Dog Show (where it counts for State Fair), she was not good, and we NQ'ed. So, no more State Fair for Iris, that was her last year.

Although Iris is retired from training/competing, I used to take her to an obedience training club, CarDunAl. I use Koehler type training with her. (If you want to train a dog in obedience, research on the Koehler method, it’s much better than treat-training, clicker-training, etc.) For agility training, we used to go to Follow That Dream Agility.

Hit By A Car!?!

It all happened tuesday morning of July 13th, 1999. My Dad took the garbage out. He noticed that the grass by the front of the house didn’t get cut. So he started the mower and started cutting the grass. He had Iris out with him, so every once in awhile he could throw a stick for her (which she lives for!).

While he was mowing by one of our many trees, a branch got in his way. So he wasn’t looking at Iris. Right that instant she got hit!!! She let out a mad scream and sounded like she was going to die (she’s a cry baby anyways). My Dad took her up to the house and we called the vet at around 6:30 in the morning. We took her over and the vet claimed that she had hip displyasia!

We took her over to some other vets and we found out that it wasn’t as bad as hip displyasia. After about a month she had surgery (femoral head osteoectomy) and recovered great!!! Thanks to our great vet, Dr. Shaw.

Here is Iris' long awaited pedigree!!!
