Ian Wherry


Musical Director, Keyboards & Backing Vocals



Ian was born in Guernsey but moved to London with his family in 1967. He studied classical piano and trombone at the Royal College of Music. Over the years he has worked as session keyboard player/programmer and producer for various people including Toyah, Dollar and Mike & The Mechanics (Mike & The Mechanics, 1982 and Word of Mouth, 1991) and as musical director for A-Ha (the 1988-89 tour which also featured Matthew Letley), Elaine Paige (Paul Bliss played keyboards together with Ian on an Elaine Paige tour), David Cassidy and Vanessa Mae (co-wrote and produced Red Hot on the album The Violin Player, 1995 and co-wrote Aurora on the album Storm, 1997), as well as David Essex.

His theatre credits include The Rocky Horror Show and various pantomimes including Robinson Crusoe. In the 1997/98 season Ian co-wrote the music and lyrics for the Darlington production of The Adventures of Robin Hood, which was directed by another Robinson Crusoe stalwart, Maurice Thorogood.

With David Essex Ian has worked as producer on the albums Touching The Ghost, Here We Are All Together and Thank You, and he has been Musical Director on his tours since 1987.

Among the fans Ian is renowned for never being seen without a smile on his face.
