Traditional Japanese Wedding Ceremony
The predominant religion in Japan is Shinto which means
"the way of the Kami" (Gods). The religious traditional japanese
wedding ceremony
is held in a Shinto shrine. Shinto wedding
ceremonies are very private with only family and close friends in
attendance.
Japanese
Wedding Tradition - Japanese Bride & Wedding Kimono
The bride wears the traditional white wedding kimono dress called
shiro-maku. Shiro
meaning white and maku meaning pure. The brides hair is styled in the traditional
wedding hair style called
bunkin-takashimada and adorned with beautiful kanzashi ornaments, combs and accessories. A
white wedding hood called a tsuno kakushi is worn for the japanese wedding ceremony.
The groom is dressed in a montsuki kimono with a short haori overcoat
bearing the family crest with pleated
hakama pants.
Japanese Wedding Customs
- The Wedding Ceremony
Traditional Japanese music consisting of flutes are performed by artists
called "ga ga ku". The japanese wedding ceremony is conducted by a Shinto priest
who first begins by purifying the couple. After the purification and vows
are performed, the ancient wedding custom of sharing sake called "san san kudo"
is performed. To close the ceremony, symbolic
offerings of small tree twigs called "sakaki" are given to the
Kami.
After the wedding ceremony, the couple greets their guest at the large reception
party where all their family, friends and coworkers are in attendance.
