A system administrator is a person who makes sure that everything runs smoothly in a system. So, system administration involves from the low-level hardware setting to high-level software setting. It is clearly beyond this paper to discuss system administration in details, however, we decided to put two topics in order to give you a clear idea of the way our basic system is installed over the network. It also covers how we can put ourselves as an ftp site for future installation by our client hosts. Though it is a very space consuming to set up a ftp site it is useful for clients like momo (192.168.0.12) who does not have a CD-ROM attached to it. 3.1 System InstallationWhile the easiest way of installing FreeBSD, our LAN OS server, from a CD-ROM or from a DOS partition, it is sometimes necessary to install it over the network from a remote ftp site. It serves us two benefits: cost and upgrade. For installing over a network, all we have to have is a connection to the internet. Moreover, since it takes quite a time to buy CD-ROMs from the market with the new versions, updated and patched versions are always available in the ftp sites. In this way we can get latest, most probably most featured though not necessarily most secured, versions from the ftp sites. However before installing over the network we have to have a clear idea of our place in our school and how we should use different proxy servers available thus comes the Fig. 3.1. As you most probably figure out that without even knowing how the different proxies or name servers works, you can simply do what you want to do just knowing their addresses. Different kinds of protocols make such kind of blind requests come true. 3.1 System Installation ServerAs you might wonder how all those ftp servers around the world provides you the necessary files to install them in your system, it is quite easy to make a ftp server of your own. Here we will not give you details of setting the server but we will give you the overview of the ftp server and how it works. Most probably it is not the best way of installing from your own ftp server since it consumes a great chunk of your hard-disk. And moreover it needs to have an anonymous ftp server. Considering all these facts installing over NFS is better and realistic idea, we think, for CD-ROMless hosts like momo (192.168.0.12). Please refer to NFS part and the details in Appendix 9 . |
