JIMBOOMBA GUIDES CURRENT NEWSLETTER

JIMBOOMBA GUIDES
SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER

FLAGSTONE UNIT OPENING:

From the 8th October 2002 a new Jimboomba Guide unit will open at the Flagstone State School.  The group will meet each Tuesday afternoon at 3.30pm during the school terms. The Unit is to initially cater for girls in grades 1 – 7.  The meetings go for approximately 2 hours and operate under the Supervision of trained and qualified leaders.

THANK YOU RANGER GUIDES:

The Jimboomba Unit would like to thank all Ranger Guides for their donation of $250.00.  This money was raised from their successful disco and rather than keep all the profits they graciously decided to donate part of the proceeds for the benefit of all the Unit.

What a generous gesture.   THANK YOU RANGERS! ☺♥♫☺♥♫☺

NEWSPAPERS:

Guides and parents - Just a reminder regarding the offer of fundraising by collecting used newspapers.  We still need help to get the newspapers to the depot.  If anyone can help or knows of anyone that would like to assist please let Annie know.  Remember this is an easy fundraiser that we can do without it costing us.  Most already buy newspapers, we all get free newspapers delivered to our homes and I am sure neighbours and friends would also help.  Let’s not let this fundraising opportunity slip by.

SEPTEMBER BIRTHDAYS:

Jacinta W - 4th ; Chantelle T - 5th ; Danielle B - 8th ; Rhiannon M - 19th

Happy Birthday and wishing you all the best for your special day.

QUOTES OF THE MONTH:

The best is yet to be. Doubt yourself and you doubt everything you see, judge yourself and you see judges everywhere. But if you listen to the sound of your own voice, you can rise above doubt and judgement and you can see forever.

Beauty is truth. Truth is beauty that's all you know on earth and all you need to know.

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.
Mahatma Gandhi

SUPPORT COMMITTEE:

We are in desperate need for more volunteer parents or adult family members for the support group. There are still some vacant positions including fundraising coordinator and vice president. If you would like to join the group or just wish to volunteer some hours towards one of the projects please see Annie. You will be warmly welcomed and your help would be greatly appreciated.

WAREHOUSE SHOPPING TRIP:

Don’t forget we have a warehouse shopping trip on Saturday the 9th November. This trip was a great success last year. The trip is a full great day of fun and shopping including morning tea and a sit-down two course meal.  This is a chance to have a break from the children for the day - there will be raffles, prizes and lots of laughs for all.  This is a great opportunity to avoid the rush and finish your Christmas shopping in one day.

One of the great places we intend to visit is the Christmas warehouse where you can find lots of inexpensive decorations, lights, trees etc everything you need for Christmas.

The cost of the day is $38.00 per person which includes morning tea, 2 course lunch and transport in a comfortable air-conditioned bus.  Seats are selling fast so if you would like to reserve your seat we need a minimum 50% deposit and then pay off the rest no later than 2 weeks prior to the trip or for those who prefer you may also pay in full when you book your seat.  Gather your family, friends, relatives and work colleagues for a great day out.

This is a great way for the Beaudesert Shire residents and surrounding areas to support a local not for profit organization which benefits the whole community.

To book your places please see or phone Annie 0417748251 or send your details and cheque or money order to: Jimboomba Guides, PO Box 84, Jimboomba, Qld. 4280.

END OF TERM:

Don’t forget this is the end of term and we hope everyone has a fantastically relaxing and safe holiday. Also after the holidays when we return we will have the extra unit at Flagstone which will be an extension of Jimboomba Guides.

We Are Only Leaders
(author unknown)

Thanks to Lisa Tjelta, who posted this great reading to the Guiding Mailing List!

We are not experts. We're your next door neighbours. We're not perfect; we are just parents like you.

We don't have any more spare time or energy than you do, we all work full time and juggle our families and our schedules and try to keep it all together as best we can.

The only difference between us is that we believe in what Guiding has to offer. So much so, that we contribute our time, our miles, and our talents to help our girls and your girls grow in Guiding.

We complete authorization forms, budgets, and registrations, and fill our homes with boxes of paperwork that you will never see.

We are required to take many hours of training as well as attend various meetings so that we can meet our greatest challenge - providing a variety of programs which meet the needs and interests of very individual girls.

We try to involve parents who want us to understand that they don't have the time to drive on outings or help at meetings. We rejoice at the generosity of others.

Sometimes we find ourselves going in too many directions, We run out of steam. We have memory lapses. Communication lines break down. Time slips by. But that doesn't mean we don't care.

So many evenings we spend on the phone, seeking advice and support from other leaders when disappointments or problems occur. "How do I keep my girl's attention?" "What are your ideas for the ceremony?" "How do you work with girls in different grades?"

Our dining tables are covered with bits of rope, menus, trip permits, craft supplies, paper work and badges for each and every girl in the unit. A couple of them won't show up, and don't think to call and let us know. Sometimes we feel unappreciated.

Yet, these girls can fill us with pride at their determination and accomplishments. Their smiles light up a room; and when they say "Thank You" it makes it all worth it.

We help these girls build relationships. Some struggle more than others. Considerate, loyal, helpful, friendly... is encouraged by the Guide Promise and Law.  And sometimes we too must learn these lessons over and over again with the girls. But we are willing to keep learning.

Please be patient if we appear distracted or frustrated or overwhelmed at times. Forgive us if we are not the kind of Leader you would be if you had the time. Instead, provide us with encouragement or offer your help.  Keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

We are, after all, only mentors...role models...leaders.  Volunteers who have taken an oath to give these girls, your girls, the most precious gift we have to offer - the gift of time.

JUNIOR GUIDES ACTIVITIES:

On the 15th August we continued working on the Air badge. We made origami planes, men in parachutes and blew bubbles.

On the 22nd August we had a leader and her daughter, who is a brownie, visited us from Sussex in England. We swapped games, made boomerang letters and a koala bookmark for them to take home to their brownie unit. We swapped blanket badges.

On the 29th August we made a father’s day card, a coupon booklet and a soap carving.

On the 5th September we held a promise ceremony for 3 Guides and a membership ceremony for another 3 Guides.

Danyce and Monique organized this as part of their Junior BP.

SENIOR GUIDES ACTIVITIES:

On the 1st August the girls sold their cooking from last week to each other. This was a practice run to see if the girls wanted to use this method to fundraise between them to lower the cost of their camps and excursions.

On the 8th August we all practiced skits in our patrols. Many laughs were had (mainly from the leaders).

On the 15th August the unit worked in patrols tonight on the Explore A Challenge badge that each patrol had chosen. Some activities the girls did were making their own bush style musical instruments, friendship bands, making greeting cards and learning the World Song.

On the 22nd August we competed in a mini Olympics with activities such as tunnel ball with tennis balls, relay races with origami frogs, weight lifting using straws and cotton wool balls and the hammer throw using tea bags.

On the 29th August we played games with the main focus being not only lots of fun but learning co-operation, leadership and listening skills. The girls had to work in one on one situation as well as group activities. Sabrina and Monique L were awarded a very belated ‘Guide of the Year” award and trophy for 2001. This badge required a lot of dedication from the girls. Both were Patrol Leaders for the year as well as earning a lot of badges through the year and participating in activities for Guides outside our normal meetings.

The ceremony was held on Saturday 7th September.
