JIMBOOMBA GUIDES August 2002 NEWSLETTER
![]()
The good news is that Jimboomba Guiding District is growing at a very fast rate. The bad news is …. ?????? Well actually there really isn’t any bad news, however we do need to restructure the district. Some age groups are now quite large and have specific needs while others are not getting the program they need. As a result we need more leaders to support those wonderful ladies who currently work so hard. Our current leaders are very flexible and willing to take any age group so the new leaders could have their choice of girls in grades 1 – 3, grades 4 – 7 or high school so nominate for whichever group takes your fancy. Don’t know anything about guides or being a leader? Don’t worry formal training is available from State Office with on-going practical training and support available from both Region and District levels. So “What is in it for you?” The satisfaction of seeing girls grow into young women who are reliable, practical and self sufficient and knowing you have helped them on their way may be enough of an incentive for you to become involved. Maybe supplying a safe environment for our girls to have fun and to learn will bring you satisfaction. But there is also the fact that being a Guide Leader and having certificates to show that you have developed certain competencies looks very good on your resume. (That is how I was accepted into teacher training and is one of the factors which made me employable). Please think about this opportunity and if you are interested contact Annie or Jo. ![]() RAFFLE TICKETS: Could everyone PLEASE make sure that all raffle tickets and money are returned to Annie ASAP. We need to have ALL tickets returned as well as money before we can draw the winner. This needs your URGENT attention. BISCUITS: Almost all of the biscuits have now been sold unfortunately we still have about 9 boxes of choc tops left. If anyone is able to help by selling the last few boxes or if anyone wishes to purchase some biscuits it would be greatly appreciated. Please see Annie. NEWSPAPERS: We have received an offer for an unusual but cheap fundraiser. There is a company that pays for old newspapers. Yes that’s right save all your newspapers for guides and they will pay by weight for the newspapers when we take them to their depot. We would like to do this fundraiser as it doesn’t take anymore than parents saving your newspapers as you get them and we will arrange a collection day/point and that’s it. We would also like to know if someone has a truck or something similar that we could load the newspapers into and if that person would be prepared to drive the truck to the depot for us. If you can or know of anyone that could assist could they please see Annie. AUGUST BIRTHDAYS: Corinne 8th Rachel 8th Sam 12th Monique 22nd Gyan 26th Rachael 27th Happy Birthday to everyone and wishing you all the best on your special day. ☺ QUOTES OF THE MONTH: v If one day you meet someone who does not SMILE at you, be generous and SMILE ☺at them. Nobody is more in need of a SMILE than those who cannot give it!
v Tomorrow’s success is founded on today’s preparation.
All quotes used are in a book called Prayers, Prose and Poems sold at the Guide Shop. SUPPORT COMMITTEE: We are in desperate need for more volunteer parents or adult family members for the support group. There are still some vacant positions including fundraising coordinator and vice president. If you would like to join the group or just wish to volunteer some hours towards one of the projects please see Annie. You will be warmly welcomed and your help would be greatly appreciated. RANGERS GO TO GANG SHOW: We made our arrangements and met at Jo’s. Well, all except for Julie who met us there. We were a bit hesitant as the Gang show has not been up to standard for the last few years – but hey! Fiona was in it and we always support our own. Dressed in full formal uniform because it was Guide night, we walked up the stairs of Schonell Theatre and were greeted by a sea of blue uniforms. That was great and very inviting – but it did make it hard to find Julie – and she had the tickets!!!!! We eventually met up and went in to take our seats. There was a lot of greeting going on because we found girls that we had been on camps or trainings with from all over Brisbane. (That’s what I love about guides – the opportunity to make friends) It was Guide night after all. The lights went down and the curtain went up. The colour, the music and the obvious enjoyment of the group on stage was contagious. Most of the songs were familiar and of the sing a long, bop a long variety – and we did. Fiona was great and her Gymnastic ability came to the fore early in the show. Are we going next year? Yes and we won’t need the incentive of having Fiona in it – we’ll just be there because it is good entertainment, good fun and good value. If you like we can take you too!!!!!!!!! ![]() JUNIOR GUIDES ACTIVITIES: On The 11th July we started working on the Australia badge making didgeridoos and colouring in the National Flag. We also had 3 girls move onto seniors this night. On the 18th July we did a bark picture thanks to Mrs Howarth and her Mum who organized this activity. We also had a cooee calling competition, a thong throwing competition, did a work search and had a relay using koala jigsaws. On the 25th July we had a koala theme making a koala finger puppet, a koala bookmark, a koala hug and decorated and ate a koala biscuit. On Sunday the 28th July we went to the Koala Sanctuary at Daisy Hill Forest Park and the sanctuary kindly gave us a talk on Koalas. On the 1st August those who didn’t have a unit bag decorated one while those who did have a bag already, made a butterfly. On the 8th August we started on the Air Badge making a weather vane and starting off a weather map, which will go all month. WEB SITE: We are looking at building a web site for Jimboomba Guides. If anyone has any suggestions or would like to assist please contact Annie or Pam. Annie will pass the message on.
UNTIL NEXT MONTH HAPPY GUIDING!
