EPISODE 31
SCENE 1
INT. PENTHOUSE GRILL - EVENING (SAME DAY AS EPISODE 30)
BO and HOPE'S wedding has already ended, and the reception is well underway. NAT KING COLE'S "UNFORGETTABLE" is playing, and JACK and JENNIFER have joined the other guests on the dance floor.
JACK: You know, I've always been baffled by the appeal of large weddings--not that I didn't cherish ours, mind you. But I must admit, as far as large weddings go, this one was... quite nice.
JENNIFER is not listening to him, but JACK does not notice, and keeps musing.
JACK: I wonder sometimes, though, if... (starts to get embarrassed about confiding in her about something) Ah, never mind...
JENNIFER: Mike and Kayla sure look like they're having fun dancing, don't you think?
JACK: (realizing JENNIFER had not even been listening) Well, I do believe my ego is sufficiently bruised.
JENNIFER: What? (turns to look at him) Oh, I'm sorry, Jack, I wasn't listening-
JACK: I noticed. (spins her and dips her low, then brings her back up with their faces almost touching) We're not even married yet and you've tired of me already, have you?
JENNIFER: (smiles, then kisses him) Believe me, that's not something you have to concern yourself with, Jack.
JACK: Good. Then perhaps I'll allow you to build my fragile ego back up again by telling me what had you so distracted just now that not even my ample charms could hold your attention...
JENNIFER: I was just busy watching Mike and Kayla over there.
JACK: I see. Looking for tips on how to trip the light fantastic?
JENNIFER smirks.
JENNIFER: I just thought they looked... cute. Like they're having a good time.
JACK: Oh no, I see what's going on here... Your heretofore dormant match-making gene has finally been awakened-
JENNIFER: (laughs) Well, it's not like Mike and Kayla such a foreign concept. I mean, they were pretty serious in high school, you know.
JACK: Yes, you've told me.
JENNIFER: So, don't you think it might be kind of nice if those old feelings were... rekindled?
JACK gives her a look.
JENNIFER: What? What's that for? Come on, can I help it if I want everyone to be in love and happy like I am? (grins at him)
JACK: Next thing you'll be telling me is how you'd like to find a suitable mate for Francoise over there.
JENNIFER: Well, it has been over a year since he and Eve broke up- (she notices JACK wince at the mention of EVE'S name) Okay, maybe we better change the subject.
JACK: I can think of a few more pleasant topics of conversation than Bundt Cake, yes.
JENNIFER: (smiles) All right. So what were you saying earlier? Before I bruised your ego, that is.
JACK: Oh, it wasn't anything important, really-
JENNIFER: No, come on, don't hold out on me. What was it?
OUT on JACK wondering if he should tell her.
SCENE 2
IN PROGRESS
JENNIFER wants to know what JACK was trying to tell her earlier, but he wonders if he needs to bring it up again.
JACK: It's nothing you need to worry about, believe me. It's rather silly, actually-
JENNIFER: Oh, so that's why you gave me such a hard time earlier about not listening? (sees that he's serious) What? What is it?
The song comes to an end. FRANK SINATRA'S "FLY ME TO THE MOON" begins to play, and JACK pulls her close.
JACK: I was just wondering if, uh... if perhaps you were regretting the fact that we decided not to have a big wedding this time. Maybe this reminded you of what you could have had if we hadn't decided to rush things...
JENNIFER: (pulls away from him slightly to look at him) Are you... are you serious?
JACK: (softly) I just don't want you to have any regrets.
JENNIFER: Jack, the only thing I regret is us waiting all these years to do this... Big or small, fancy or simple--whatever our wedding is, I'm going to love it, because it's our wedding. No one else's.
She pulls him towards her and kisses him.
JENNIFER: So, you better not get cold feet on me, Jack Deveraux.
JACK: (smiles) Not a chance...
MIKE comes up to them and tapes JACK on the shoulder.
MIKE: Ahem.
JACK: Can I help you?
MIKE: (grins) Why yes, I was wondering if I might be able to cut in and steal my baby sis for one dance. You have been keeping her all to yourself all night.
JACK: As a matter of fact, she's the one who's been keeping me to herself all night, so please, take her off my hands- (JENNIFER hits him) Yes, I think I'll go find my other favorite lady--I thought I saw her with her cousins over by the cake earlier, admiring the lovely frosting. (looks at JENNIFER) I'd better inspect those little fingers to see if there's any evidence of premature tasting.
JENNIFER: (laughs) Try not to be too hard on her, Jack. (to MIKE) And you--you've got good timing. I've been wanting to talk to you all night, but you've been pretty chummy with Kayla over there-
JACK: That's my cue to leave...
MIKE: Wait a minute, Jack, I've changed my mind--take her back!
JACK: I'm sorry, you're on your own now. (leaves to find ABBY)
JENNIFER: Actually this has nothing to do with Kayla and how cute you two have looked all night.
MIKE groans.
JENNIFER: I'm serious... There's something I need to ask you...
OUT on MIKE'S curiosity.
SCENE 3
CUT TO: JACK
JACK sees ABBY playing with her cousins and decides to go get some champagne. He does not see VICTOR walk over to stand beside him at the bar.
VICTOR: (to the bartender) I'd like another glass of champagne too, please.
JACK immediately feels dread upon hearing VICTOR'S voice.
VICTOR: Beautiful wedding, isn't it?
JACK: (without looking at him) Yes. (takes his champagne from the bartender) Now if you'll excuse me-
VICTOR: Oh, what a shame. I was hoping we'd get to continue our discussion from the other night.
JACK: I'm afraid I'm going to have to disappoint you, then. You see, surprisingly, I've actually been enjoying myself tonight, and I don't really want my evening to be spoiled now.
VICTOR: (as JACK starts to leave) I take it you're still declining my offer.
JACK: How very perceptive of you, Victor. (beat) Look, this isn't really the time or the place-
VICTOR: I was simply trying to have a pleasant conversation with you, Jack-
JACK: Virtually impossible, as you should know by now.
VICTOR: (holds up his hands) As you can see, I'm not carrying any weapons.
JACK: None that can be seen in plain sight, anyway. As to what you may or may not be hiding up your sleeves...
VICTOR: You really hate me this much?
JACK: Gee, Victor, what gave you that impression?
VICTOR: Don't you think Isabella would want us to at least be civil to each other?
JACK is caught off-guard by VICTOR'S words and immediately feels guilty. VICTOR sees this and enjoys JACK'S reaction.
JACK: So... (wanting to change the subject) Where is your beloved wife tonight?
VICTOR: (visibly tenses at the mention of KATE) She's spending Christmas in France this year. With Billie.
JACK: (sips his champagne) Trouble in paradise?
VICTOR: (regaining his cool demeanor) It's a difficult time for Billie, as you might imagine. Kate wanted to be there for her.
JACK: Ah yes, of course. Ex getting married and all.
VICTOR: Look, Jack, I'm sure the last thing you wanted to do tonight was discuss my personal life.
JACK: You're right, Victor. Let's go on to a far more interesting subject. How about you tell me just what it is that you're up to and how I fit into all of this?
SCENE 4
CUT TO: JENNIFER AND MIKE
JENNIFER has something important to ask MIKE.
MIKE: Something you need to ask me, huh? Should I be scared?
JENNIFER: No, of course not!
MIKE: You're sure?
JENNIFER: (laughs) My brother, the comedian. Would you please be serious?
MIKE: Fine, fine. You sure know how to get a guy's attention. What's up, Squirt?
JENNIFER: All right, there's something I hope you'll do for me.
MIKE: Anything. You know I'd do anything for you.
JENNIFER: (smiles) I know.
MIKE: So, what is it?
JENNIFER: Well, Dad was supposed to fly home for the wedding, but he called yesterday and said he and his team were called away to Rwanda, and now he doesn't think he'll be able to make it next week.
MIKE: Oh, Squirt, I'm sorry... I know how much you wanted him to be here.
JENNIFER: I did. But I understand, I mean this was last minute and everything... and then I realized something. You owe me.
MIKE: Come again?
JENNIFER: (thumps him on the chest) You owe me, Mike. You couldn't make it to my wedding last time, so that means you are obligated to make that up to me.
MIKE: (laughs) And what, pray tell, will be required of me?
JENNIFER: (softly) I want you to give me away.
MIKE: (touched) You do?
JENNIFER: (nods) I want you to be the one to give me away, Mike. Will you do that for me?
MIKE: Jen... You know I'd be honored to... (kisses her forehead) I couldn't think of anything that would make me prouder than to walk my little sister down the aisle.
OUT on JENNIFER'S smile.
SCENE 5
CUT TO JACK AND VICTOR
JACK wants to know what VICTOR is up to.
VICTOR: I think you're being a bit paranoid, Jack. I have no ulterior motive here. I just know that you've wanted this newspaper for a long time. I'm here to sell it to you.
JACK: (not buying it) Out of the kindness of your heart. Out of the blue?
VICTOR: What more can I do to show you my sincerity?
JACK: How about starting with telling me the truth?
VICTOR: I have been telling you the truth.
JACK: All right, this conversation is going in circles... I'm obviously not going to get a straight answer from you, so how about this: you've been well aware of my financial status, Victor. What makes you think I can even afford to buy the paper back, even if I were interested?
VICTOR: Well, Jack, you're hardly in the poorhouse. I hear your freelancing career has been quite lucrative over the years-
JACK: Hardly.
VICTOR: Weren't you offered quite a sizeable advance by Time Life for your book?
JACK: (surprised that VICTOR knew about that) You have been keeping tabs on me.
VICTOR: I always find it advantageous to know as much as I can about the people with whom I do business.
JACK: For the last time, Victor--I want no part of your schemes. I'm still recovering from the last time I tangled with you-
JENNIFER has come over to where JACK is and overheard JACK'S last comment.
JENNIFER: Jack, what's going on?
JACK: Nothing... (starts to leave with her)
VICTOR: Don't be a fool, Jack. This is a golden opportunity, and you know it. Don't let your pride be your downfall as it has before!
JENNIFER: (as she and JACK are walking away) What is he talking about? What's this golden opportunity?
JACK: It's nothing worth mentioning... Come on, I do believe I hear a tango playing now-
JENNIFER: Uh, actually, Jack, I was thinking that maybe we could sneak out of here a little early, what do you say? Abby's a little tired and we should probably get her to bed soon so we can play Santa...
JACK: (relieved to change the subject) That sounds like a fabulous idea. Let's go.
SCENE 6
INT. JACK AND JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM - LATER
JACK and JENNIFER walk into the house, with JENNIFER carrying a sleeping ABBY. As they come in, JACK notices that the dining table is set up with candles and a bottle of champagne chilling, and the Christmas tree is all lit.
JACK: You?
JENNIFER: (whispering so she does not wake ABBY) Well, Jack, you're always surprising me. I figured it was your turn.
JACK: When did you have time to do this after Calliope kidnapped you and the child this morning?
JENNIFER: (laughs) I didn't. Calliope did. I told her she owed me after taking me away from you this morning. (beat) I'll be right back.
JENNIFER goes upstairs to put ABBY in her room, while JACK pops open the champagne bottle.
JACK: (handing a glass to JENNIFER, who has just come back) Perhaps we have time for a quick glass before Santa duty?
JENNIFER: (smiles) Actually, I think we may have time for more than that.
JACK gives her a look of surprise.
JACK: Right now?
JENNIFER: (laughs) I didn't mean that... I meant--we could exchange gifts.
JACK: Oh yes, of course.
They sit down in front of the tree and each retrieve their presents. JACK hands her his gift first.
JACK: It's, um... It's a bit of a high-maintenance gift-
JENNIFER: High-maintenance?
JACK: Yes, but I have a feeling you won't mind too much... Well, you'll see when you open it.
JENNIFER smiles back at him in curiosity, and opens the box, then her jaw drops open in shock.
JENNIFER: Oh, Jack...
She takes out the gift. It is a jade plant, like the one he gave her all those years ago.
JACK: It's not the original, obviously, but... I thought after everything we've been through in the last few months that it seemed rather apropos. (beat) The sentiment is certainly the same.
JENNIFER: (looking up at him with tears in her eyes) I love it, Jack. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect gift.
JACK gets a little embarrassed, and JENNIFER notices.
JENNIFER: Okay, your turn. (hands him the gift) You're never going to guess what it is.
JACK: (turning it over in his hands, trying to figure it out) No, I don't believe I will.
JENNIFER: Actually, I have Vern to thank for helping me find this-
JACK: Vern?
JENNIFER: Yup. I wouldn't have been able to get it if it weren't for him. He was a godsend!
JACK: For heaven's sake don't tell him that--just what the man needs, another ego boost.
JENNIFER: (laughing) Jack, would you just open it already?
He tears off the gift-wrap and sees that it's a large frame, and inside is an old copy of THE SPECTATOR.
JENNIFER: (excitedly) It was your very first issue as publisher. See, look at the date...
JACK: (extremely moved by this gift) I... This is truly something...
JENNIFER: You like it?
JACK: (nodding) I can't believe you thought of this...
JENNIFER: Well, it was a really special time in your life. (beat) In both our lives.
JACK: Yes it was.
He thinks about VICTOR'S offer again, and wonders if he is doing the right thing by not taking it.
JENNIFER: Hey... what is it?
JACK: Uh... This just got me thinking, that's all.
JENNIFER: (smiles) About old times?
JACK: Yes. And about times to come, as well. (beat) What would you say... if I told you that Victor Kiriakis is offering to sell The Spectator back to me?
OUT on JENNIFER'S shock.
SCENE 7
IN PROGRESS
JACK has just told JENNIFER about VICTOR'S offer.
JENNIFER: Are you serious? Victor's offering the paper back to you?
JACK nods.
JENNIFER: Jack, that's what you've wanted for so long! That's great news... (notices that JACK does not seem very happy) Isn't it?
JACK: I suppose on the surface it does seem too good to be true...
JENNIFER: But... the fact that Victor made the offer makes you wary.
JACK: (gets up) I don't know... Am I crazy to be so skeptical? Beware of Greeks bearing gifts, after all.
JENNIFER smiles.
JACK: Maybe Kate was right. Maybe it is time that I just let go of this grudge.
JENNIFER: Kate was right about something? Now there's something I won't hear you saying too often.
JACK: (laughs) Believe me, no one is more reluctant than I am to admit that.
He picks up his framed issue again, and looks at it.
JACK: You know, that newspaper was probably the most expensive thing I have ever bought on impulse. All I really wanted to do with it was to tick Diana off. (beat) I never expected to fall in love with it.
JENNIFER: Jack, you know what you have to do. I know Victor is probably the last person in the world that you want anything to do with, but... can you honestly tell me you don't get a rush just thinking about being back in that office again? Knowing that that's where you belong?
JACK: No, I guess I can't.
JENNIFER: Then do it, Jack. Finish what should have been done a long time ago. Make it right again.
JACK: (smiles) That simple, huh?
JENNIFER: That simple.
JACK looks back at the frame.
JACK: All right, then. (beat) Victor's about to get the shock of his life.
EPISODE 32
SCENE 1
INT. JO'S HOTEL ROOM AT THE SALEM INN - AFTERNOON (A FEW DAYS AFTER EPISODE 31)
JO and ABBY have spent the day together so JACK and JENNIFER can get the last minute wedding preparations taken care of. They have come back from the bookstore and are spread out on the bed, looking at all the books JO has just bought for ABBY.
ABBY: (pointing to something in her new atlas) That's where Venice is, right Grandma? In Italy?
JO: (takes a look) Why, that's absolutely right, sweetheart! Good for you...
ABBY: That's where Mommy and Daddy are going to go on their honeymoon.
JO: It sure is.
ABBY: I wish I could go too. Daddy says it's really pretty there. (matter-of-factly) But Mommy and Daddy need their alone time.
JO: (amused) Yes, they do. But you know what? I bet they'll miss you like crazy while they're gone, and they'll call you every single day. And hey, we're going to have lots of fun, right? Just you and me?
ABBY: Yeah!
JO: And maybe Uncle Vern will even come to visit. (beat) You like Uncle Vern, don't you?
ABBY: Oh yes, he's really nice! Are you and Uncle Vern friends, Grandma?
JO: Uh... (wondering if JACK will get wind of this conversation) Well, yes, honey, we are.
ABBY: I'm glad. I think he likes you.
JO blushes and giggles.
ABBY: Grandma, is it okay if I ask you something?
JO: Well of course it is, sweetheart!
ABBY: Good. 'Cause I've asked Mommy and Daddy before, but they get all sad. I don't want to make them sad.
JO: What is it?
ABBY: Why did Mommy and Daddy get divorced in the first place? Is it because of me?
OUT on JO'S pained expression.
SCENE 2
INT. JACK AND JENNIFER'S LIVING ROOM - SAME
JENNIFER is on the phone with the caterers, and she is very stressed. On the dining table are the half finished rice bags for the wedding, which she, HOPE, and ALICE did not get done last night.
JENNIFER: I understand, but I didn't get the final head count until a few days ago. Yes, I know it's short notice, but... Look, my cousin's husband said it would be fine to give you the head count this week-
The doorbell rings.
JENNIFER: Uh, there's someone at my door, could you please--hello? Hello? Yes, I'm still here. Fine, I will talk to Mr. Williams. I'm sure everything will be straightened out. Yes, goodbye.
She goes to answer the door, and as she does, she screams out in frustration, startling ADRIENNE.
JENNIFER: Adrienne!
ADRIENNE: Jennifer... (laughs) I guess I don't have to ask you if everything's all right?
JENNIFER gives her a weak smile.
SCENE 3
INT. TITAN PUBLISHING HOUSE - SAME
JACK has come to see VICTOR to tell him he has decided to buy THE SPECTATOR back from TITAN. He is standing outside of VICTOR'S office, absently looking at a sculpture while he waits for the secretary to send him in.
JACK: (muttering to himself) With all his money, you'd think he could afford the originals, not some knockoffs...
VICTOR: As a matter of fact, that is an original.
JACK turns around, embarrassed.
JACK: Victor.
VICTOR: (smug smile) Jack. I must say I'm surprised to see you here.
JACK: (clears throat) Yes, well... so am I, if you want to know the truth.
VICTOR: Shall we?
He opens the door to his office and extends his hand. JACK walks in, feeling much like a lamb to the slaughterhouse, second guessing his decision to come here.
VICTOR: I'm surprised you're not taking care of last minute wedding details. Justin tells me you're getting married on Sunday, are you not?
JACK: Don't you worry your pretty little head about it, Victor. It'll be taken care of. (beat) I'm here about business.
VICTOR: I see. You'll pardon my shock when I ask, what could this possibly be about?
JACK: (gives him a sarcastic smile) Oh, come on, we've known each other too long to hide behind pretenses. You know exactly why I'm here.
OUT on VICTOR'S self-satisfied grin.
SCENE 4
CUT TO: JO AND ABBY
ABBY has just asked JO about JACK and JENNIFER'S divorce, and JO does not quite know what to say.
JO: Honey... what makes you ask a question like that?
ABBY: You're doing what they do.
JO: I... I am? What am I doing?
ABBY: You're answering my question with a question. That's what they do when I ask them. (beat) Am I bad for asking?
JO: No!! Oh no, Abby, you are not bad for asking, don't you ever think that, sweetheart... It's just that, well, it's a very sad thing to think about, your parents' divorce. And I'm sure they don't want you to be sad about it either.
ABBY: I just wonder sometimes... Was it my fault? They got along before I was born, right? So why did they get a divorce when I was a baby?
JO'S heart breaks to hear her granddaughter saying this.
JO: (cups ABBY'S face) Sweetheart, it was not your fault in any way--I promise! And I know your mommy and daddy would not want you thinking it is.
ABBY: So why? Why did they get divorced?
JO: Well... (takes a deep breath) Your mommy and daddy were going through a very tough time then. You were very sick and both of them were really worried about you-
ABBY: So it was my fault!
JO: No, Abby. Listen to me, it was not your fault. Your mommy and daddy--they just lost their way for a little while, that's all. Sometimes that happens to grownups. And at the time, they decided it would be best to get a divorce.
ABBY: Didn't they love each other anymore?
JO: (smiles) Oh, honey, the one thing I know for sure is that they never stopped loving each other. But they had problems, and they had to work on them first before they could get back together.
ABBY listens intently.
JO: Do you understand now, Abby?
ABBY: I guess so.
JO: (teasing) You guess so? Now what does that mean?
ABBY: Grandma, do you think... that this time they'll stay married forever?
OUT on JO.
SCENE 5
CUT TO: JENNIFER AND ADRIENNE
ADRIENNE has come over to visit JENNIFER, who is stressed from planning the wedding.
JENNIFER: Come in, come in... I'm so sorry about screaming like that--I didn't mean to scare you!
ADRIENNE: (laughing) Oh please, I have four boys under twelve, remember? My threshold for noise is quite high, I assure you.
JENNIFER laughs too.
JENNIFER: Uh... I'm going to have to apologize for the mess... Grandma and Hope and I were working on rice bags last night, but didn't get to finish--they're supposed to come tonight and help me get them done. And then Jack and I were working on our book earlier today, and I haven't had a chance to clean up yet-
ADRIENNE: (puts her hands on JENNIFER'S shoulders) Whoa, whoa... Breathe for a second, all right? Take in the air. Believe me, you'll be surprised at the wonders that does.
JENNIFER does what ADRIENNE suggest and takes in a deep breath, then exhales.
ADRIENNE: Good, that's it... You feel any better?
JENNIFER: (smiles) Yeah, a little.
ADRIENNE: See, I know what I'm doing. (beat) I know what it's got to be like right now.
JENNIFER: You do, don't you?
ADRIENNE: (nodding) I remember what a wreck I was before my second wedding. I kept thinking how silly it was to be this frazzled when I had been through it before, but if anything it was more nerve-wracking!
JENNIFER: Oh, good, I'm not the only one who feels this way?
ADRIENNE: Are you kidding? (takes her arm) Here, come on, let's sit down. I bet you haven't sat in hours.
JENNIFER: How'd you guess?
ADRIENNE: (laughs) Stab in the dark.
JENNIFER: I'm sorry, you came here for something and I've got you taking care of me here!
ADRIENNE: No, no, no, don't worry. I did come over here for a reason. I knew you must be stressed out of your mind, and I thought I could help.
JENNIFER: (touched) That's really sweet, Adrienne... I don't know what to say... Thank you...
ADRIENNE: Don't thank me. That's what sisters are for.
JENNIFER: I've always wanted a sister.
ADRIENNE: Me too. And I feel bad that you and I didn't get to really be close like Kayla and I were. If Justin and I hadn't been so far away when you and Jack were having problems-
JENNIFER: Oh, hey, don't do that. Don't say things like that. You had your own family to take care of, and they needed to be your number one priority.
ADRIENNE: You're my family too. I know Jack and I didn't find each other until we were all grown up, but that doesn't change the fact that I love him like any sister would love her big brother. And I promise, I will be here for you. (beat) Starting now.
OUT on JENNIFER'S smile.
SCENE 6
CUT TO: JACK AND VICTOR
JACK is about to tell VICTOR that he will take him up on his offer.
JACK: Victor Kiriakis, speechless? I never thought I'd live to see the day.
VICTOR: What can I say, Jack, you've caught me by surprise.
JACK: (tries not to roll his eyes) Yes, I'm sure.
VICTOR: So I take it, you have changed your mind. You are here about the newspaper, aren't you?
JACK nods.
VICTOR: You've decided to take my offer after all.
JACK: (sarcastically) Thank you ever so much for making it so easy by not gloating.
VICTOR laughs.
JACK: (clears throat) Look, given my... adamant position before, I'm sure you're wondering why I changed my mind.
VICTOR: Yes, as a matter of fact I did wonder that. (beat) What convinced you?
JACK: Jennifer did.
VICTOR: (surprised at the answer) I see. How nice, your wife influenced you.
JACK: Something that's never happened to you, I take it?
VICTOR: (cool smile) Kate and I... have a mutual understanding in our marriage.
JACK: Marriage, yes... As I recall, it was more of a business arrangement. With my newspaper as the dowry.
VICTOR: You may find this hard to believe, Jack, but I do have a heart underneath this exterior. And I did love my wife once. Very much.
JACK: How touching.
VICTOR: But... things have changed. Much time has passed and... well, it is time to move on, and time to shake things up. So that is why I am doing this.
JACK: I see, so you're going through a mid-life crisis and unloading this newspaper will somehow be the elixir you need to spice up your life once again?
VICTOR: (laughs) You certainly have a way with words, Jack.
JACK: Yes, and I suppose my Ferarro Award proves that.
VICTOR: This is the most unusual business transaction I have ever had.
JACK: Why, thank you. The feeling is mutual.
VICTOR: You remind me a lot of your stepmother, Jack. In your face and always to the point.
JACK: Anjelica did manage to instill some useful skills in me.
VICTOR: Well, let's cut to the chase, then. (sticks out his hand) Do we have a deal?
JACK: (looks at VICTOR'S hand for a moment before shaking it) So tell me, Victor. Have I just made a bargain with the devil?
KATE bursts into VICTOR'S office.
KATE: Yes, Jack, I'm afraid you have. (looks at both of them) Do you two want to tell me what the hell just went down in this office?
OUT on JACK observing the happy couple.
SCENE 7
CUT TO: JO AND ABBY
ABBY wants to know if JACK and JENNIFER will stay married this time.
ABBY: If they got divorced last time even though they still loved each other, how do we know they won't get divorced again, Grandma?
JO: Oh, Abby... I know all of this seems really confusing to you right now. And I'll let you in on a little secret: it's still pretty confusing for me too, sometimes. But I want you to remember one thing, always. Your mommy and daddy love each other very, very much. And no matter what happens, they will be in each other's lives forever.
ABBY: So they won't get divorced again?
JO: (laughs) Not if I can help it.
ABBY: Not if I can help it either!
JO: That's it, then--we're a team, is that a deal? You and I, and your Great-Grandma Alice will make sure they stay together forever, right?
ABBY: Forever.
JO hugs her.
ABBY: Grandma?
JO: Yes, sweetheart...
ABBY: I'm really glad we got to spend the day together.
JO: (smiles) Me too, honey... Me too. Oh, I miss you so much when I'm not around...
ABBY: I miss you too! I wish you didn't have to live so far away.
JO: Well... You want to know a secret?
ABBY: Sure!
JO: Now, you can't tell your mommy and daddy just yet because I want to surprise them, all right?
ABBY: I won't tell, cross my heart! I keep good secrets!
JO: (laughs) Okay, good... Well, I am going to be moving back here soon, honey. Very soon.
ABBY: (excitedly) You are??
JO: I sure am! Oh, I have missed it here, Abby. Salem's my home. And your cousins are all getting older, so your Aunt Adrienne doesn't need me so much anymore. And now that your mommy and daddy are getting married again, who knows, there might be more babies soon-
ABBY: I can get a baby brother!
JO: Or a baby sister, yes, honey. I want to be here for that, and for you too.
ABBY: Oh, Grandma, they're going to be so happy when they find out!!
JO: I hope so, Abby... (hugs her) I really hope so...
OUT on the two.
SCENE 8
CUT TO: JACK, VICTOR, AND KATE
KATE has just walked in on JACK and VICTOR sealing the deal that will allow JACK to reacquire THE SPECTATOR.
JACK: My, that was a quick vacation, Kate. I guess you jet-setters are used to just zooming back and forth between continents, aren't you?
KATE: Not that it's any of your business, Jack, but I flew back to ring in the New Year with my little boy. (looks at VICTOR) But I come back to this! Just what the hell is going on here?
VICTOR: You're too late, Kate. I've just sold The Spectator back to Jack.
JACK gives her a smug smile.
KATE: (stunned) You... what??
JACK: You heard him. You are now looking at the new owner of The "once-great-now-mediocre-will-be-great-again-in-the-near-future" Spectator.
KATE: (to VICTOR) You can't do that. I own part of that newspaper--you can't just sell it without my knowledge or permission-
VICTOR: On the contrary, my love. I can and I have.
JACK: Oh come on, Kate, it's not like you ever cared about it, really-
KATE: Stay out of this, Jack!
VICTOR: I sure as hell wasn't going to let you steal it away from me as some sort of alimony!
JACK suddenly realizes why VICTOR did this. Though part of him resents being a pawn in their games, he is also happy to finally have his paper back.
JACK: Well, I can tell this is a private conversation now... I'd best be going...
VICTOR: The papers should be ready this afternoon, Jack. I'll have them Fed-exed to you as soon as they're ready.
JACK: (nodding) Of course. Good-bye, Victor. Kate.
He slips out of the office, and still hears their voices through the door as they continue to scream at each other. Then he smiles to himself.
JACK: I'm back.
OUT on JACK'S triumph.
SCENE 9
INT. JACK AND JENNIFER'S BEDROOM - LATER
JACK and JENNIFER have just finished tucking ABBY in and are in bed.
JENNIFER: I've never seen her so excited about something. I wonder what this surprise is that she keeps saying we're going to have?
JACK: If you ask me, she's been hanging around her grandmother a little bit too long and has picked up some of her bad habits--like keeping us in the dark about things.
JENNIFER: (laughing) I can't think of a better influence on her than Jo, so stop complaining.
JACK: (smiles) Well, you're certainly in a more relaxed state than what I had left you in earlier.
JENNIFER: That's because I am more relaxed, Jack. And it was all because of Adrienne.
JACK: Adrienne?
JENNIFER: Mm hmm. She came over and helped me finish the rice packets. And we talked.
JACK: (arching an eyebrow) About?
JENNIFER: About the stress of getting married again and how it'll all be forgotten fairly quickly after the minister tells you to kiss me.
JACK: I see.
JENNIFER smiles and kisses him.
JENNIFER: Speaking of relaxed, you're pretty relaxed now yourself.
JACK: (grins) Well that's what happens when someone finds his Holy Grail.
JENNIFER: Oh, Jack, I can't believe it's finally happened... I am so happy for you! I know how much you've wanted this...
She touches his face, and he puts his hand over hers and gently strokes it.
JACK: (softly) Sometimes I wondered if I would ever get it back.
JENNIFER: I never doubted it.
JACK: No?
JENNIFER: Nope.
JACK: That's what I lo-
JENNIFER: (grinning) What was that, Jack?
JACK: That's what I... lo...
JENNIFER: Lo...
JACK: That's what I... love about you.
JENNIFER: (laughs) See, that wasn't so hard, was it?
JACK smiles and kisses her, gently at first, then their kiss turns more passionate.
JENNIFER: Oh yes, I definitely remember this...
JACK pulls away slightly and grins at her.
JENNIFER: What?
JACK: I can't believe I'm about to say this.
JENNIFER: (worried) About to say what?
JACK: Uh... well, our wedding is in two days...
JENNIFER: Uh huh...
JACK: Well, don't you think it might be... romantic... if we...
JENNIFER: (smiles) Jack, are you saying we should wait until our wedding night?
JACK: (clears throat) I know it's not what you were expecting me to say-
JENNIFER: (interrupts him with a kiss) Do you have any idea how much I love you, Jack Deveraux?
JACK: Wait a minute, I won't make love to you, and you love me because of that?
JENNIFER: (laughs) No, I love you because you're the most wonderful man in the world.
JACK: Oh. (beat) I rather like the sound of that.
JENNIFER: I thought you would. (caresses his cheek) All right. Two days. I think I can wait.
JACK: (half-smiles) Yeah?
JENNIFER: Yeah. (suddenly grabs a pillow and tosses it at him) As long as we don't sleep in the same bedroom.
JACK: Wait... What, you're kicking me out?
JENNIFER: (playfully pushing him off the bed) I will not be tempted!
JACK reluctantly gets out of bed and turns around to look at her when he gets to the door.
JACK: Two days.
JENNIFER: Two days.
OUT on JACK and JENNIFER.
EPISODE 33
SCENE 1
INT. JACK AND JENNIFER'S BEDROOM - DAY (TWO DAYS AFTER EPISODE 32)
ABBY comes barreling into JACK and JENNIFER'S bedroom. She is the first person to wake up that morning, and can no longer contain her excitement, so she leaps onto the bed.
ABBY: (shaking a sleeping JENNIFER) Wake up!! Wake up, wake up!!
JENNIFER: (half-asleep) Abby? (slowly opens her eyes) Baby, what time is it-
ABBY: Wake up, Mommy! Wake up! Today's the day you and Daddy are getting married!
She tugs on JENNIFER'S arm.
ABBY: Come on, let's get a move on! Time's a wastin'! Slowpokes miss out on all the fun!
JENNIFER: (laughing as ABBY tries to pull her up) Let me take a wild guess on who taught you that one...
ABBY rushes over to the other side of the bed.
ABBY: Daddy, you have to wake up too-
She tries to shake him, then realizes it is a pillow. She throws off the covers, sees he's not there on the other side of the bed.
ABBY: Daddy?! (to JENNIFER) Where's Daddy?!
JENNIFER: Oh, sweetie, he's-
ABBY: (scared) You and Daddy are still going to get married--right, Mommy?
OUT on JENNIFER'S amusement.
SCENE 2
INT. VERN'S GUEST ROOM - SAME
JACK is still sleeping, snoring lightly. VERN comes in and chuckles when he hears him. He waves a cup of coffee under JACK'S nose.
VERN: Jack...
JACK: (smelling the coffee) Wha... What? What's going on, what?
He wakes up startled, and accidentally knocks over the cup in VERN'S hand. JACK and VERN both scream when the hot coffee spills on JACK.
JACK: What the hell are you doing?
VERN: (overlapping) Aww, look at the mess you've made! I'm going to have to get that quilt cleaned now!
JACK: (fully awake now) Would you mind telling me why I am covered in hot--and I do mean scorching hot--coffee? What are you doing in here?
VERN: I was trying to wake you up... (embarrassed laugh)
JACK: (mumbling) Well, you've certainly succeeded.
VERN: It is your wedding day, in case you've forgotten.
JACK: Of course I haven't forgotten! I wouldn't have spent the night here otherwise, since I was given strict orders not to see the bride on our wedding day. (looks at VERN) Even though I've already been married to her.
VERN chuckles.
JACK: Tell me something, Vern, how did these ludicrous superstitions come about, anyhow? (gets up out of bed)
VERN: Beats me, Jack, but come on, let's get you moving-
JACK: Get me moving--Vern, it is 10:00. The wedding is at 3:30. I'd say I have more than enough time to get myself ready. I mean, all I really have to do is shower and show up-
VERN: Look, I know you're a newspaper man and you love the rush of getting an article done right before the deadline, but this is not the same thing, all right?
JACK grins when VERN mentions the newspaper, and VERN notices.
VERN: What's that look for?
JACK: (wanting to surprise VERN with the news later) Look, what look? I think you're seeing things again, Vern... Let's go get me married!
He walks out and VERN watches him.
OUT on VERN sighing and shaking his head.
SCENE 3
CUT TO: JENNIFER AND ABBY
ABBY has discovered JACK is gone and fears her parents might not be getting married after all.
ABBY: You didn't change your minds, did you, Mommy? You're still getting married, right?
JENNIFER: Baby, of course we are! What a silly question.
ABBY: Then where's Daddy?
JENNIFER: Daddy's at Uncle Vern's. He spent the night there--he left after we tucked you in.
ABBY: (eyes wide) You kicked him out of the house?
JENNIFER: (laughs) No, sweetie. He's just not supposed to see me before the wedding, that's all, so he went to Uncle Vern's. (cups ABBY'S face) So don't worry, okay?
ABBY: Okay. I just can't wait until you guys are married again, Mommy.
JENNIFER: (smiles) Me too. (looks at the clock) Well, it's a little early but what do you say you help me get ready until Hope and Grandma and the rest of the girls get here?
ABBY: Sure!
JENNIFER: Okay, I knew I could count on you...
She goes to her dresser to get something the sits back down on the bed.
JENNIFER: C'mere, baby, I want to show you something...
ABBY sits on her lap.
JENNIFER: You see this?
ABBY: What is it, Mommy?
JENNIFER: It's a shell that Daddy gave me a long time ago, when we were stuck on this island.
ABBY: You were stuck on an island?? Like Swiss Family Robinson?
JENNIFER: (smiles) Something like that, yeah...
ABBY: (looks at the ring) It's so pretty!
JENNIFER: It is, isn't it? You see how it's shaped like a ring?
ABBY: Uh huh...
JENNIFER: Well, I used to wear it as a ring all the time. (looks at ABBY) And I would really love it if you could wear it today--would you do that for me?
ABBY: Can I, really?
JENNIFER: Absolutely... It's a little big to wear on your finger, but you can wear it on a chain around your neck.
ABBY: Do I get to keep it, Mommy? Please? I promise to take good care of it...
JENNIFER: I know you will, baby. (beat) Every time you look at that ring, I want you to remember how much Daddy and I love each other, all right?
ABBY: I know. Grandma said you guys'll love each other forever.
JENNIFER: (kisses ABBY'S forehead) Your Grandma Jo is right. (looks at the ring) Forever.
OUT on mother and daughter.
SCENE 4
INT. VERN'S BATHROOM - LATER
VERN is helping JACK get dressed. JACK is wearing a white tuxedo, with his jacket still hanging on the door as VERN helps him with his cufflinks.
JACK: I sure hope those heat lamps work like a charm out on that island, or we are all going to be frozen popsicles before we make it down the aisle.
VERN: (struggling with the cufflinks) Why did you pick the island of all places to get married in? Call me old-fashioned, but to me, weddings are always in a church or city hall. Much warmer either way.
JACK: (seeing VERN fiddling with the cufflinks) You know, Sheldon had much nimbler fingers than you-
VERN gives him a look.
JACK: (apologetic smile) I mean, thank you, Vern. That's so... dexterous of you.
VERN goes back to putting the cufflinks in.
JACK: As a matter of fact, there was a reason we chose the island as the place for our wedding.
VERN: I know--you wanted to be different. Wild West Arena, islands, same difference, right?
JACK: (smirks) No, Vern. For your information--and I know this might stun you--there is a sentimental reason behind all this.
VERN: Oh... Well, I'm sorry I doubted you, Jack.
JACK: Quite all right.
VERN is still trying to get the cufflinks snapped shut.
JACK: Vern, would you just... here, you know what, allow me. I'd hate to have you strain yourself on such a minor task.
VERN: I can handle it-
JACK: No, really, it's fine. Thank you. Why don't you, uh... Why don't you start getting ready?
VERN: Oh, please, it takes me ten minutes to get dressed.
JACK: (trying to give him a hint) Your talent astounds me. I really think you shouldn't let that amazing ability go to waste.
VERN: (smirks) Whatever you say, Jack. (starts to leave) I'll be right in here if you need me. Just holler.
JACK: Oh, I will!
He manages to put the cufflinks in and snap them shut, then slips into his jacket. He looks at his reflection and sees that he's forgotten to put on his tie.
JACK: Vern? Hey... Vern? Vern, have you seen my tie? I think I left it in the guest room...
VERN does not answer.
JACK: Vern? Ver--
He gets frustrated, and decides to go to VERN'S room.
JACK: Vern! (bangs on the door) What, did you put earplugs in? Vern! (opens the door) Have you seen my-
He sees VERN lying on the ground.
JACK: Oh my God...
SCENE 5
INT. JACK AND JENNIFER'S BEDROOM - SAME
HOPE, ALICE, JO, ADRIENNE, and CALLIOPE have come over to the house to help JENNIFER get ready. JENNIFER is still in a robe and is sitting on the bed as CALLIOPE applies her make-up.
JENNIFER: Now, um, Calliope... It's not that I don't trust you, but remember, I said I want to look natural.
CALLIOPE: Yes, yes, I remember. You wanted the natural look. (grins) Honey, even the natural look takes time to do.
JENNIFER looks to HOPE for help, but HOPE just grins at her.
HOPE: Just a few more hours, Jen... You nervous?
JENNIFER: Nope.
ADRIENNE: (incredulous, exchanges amused glances with HOPE) Oh, really?
JENNIFER: (smiles) Really.
ADRIENNE: You're not nervous, even a little bit?
HOPE: Not even the tiniest bit?
ALICE: Now, girls, if Jennifer says she's not nervous, I'm sure she isn't. After all, she's been waiting for this day for a long time, haven't you darling?
JENNIFER: That's right, Grandma-
CALLIOPE: Blot your lips for me for just a second, honey...
JENNIFER blots her lips.
JENNIFER: That's right, Grandma. I've waited six years for this, and it's finally going to happen.
JO: Well, I always knew it was going to happen. I did. I said to myself, those two kids were meant to be together, and they are going to make it work somehow, someway.
ABBY: You're psychic, Grandma!
JO: (laughing) Oh, I don't know about that, sweetheart-
The phone rings.
JENNIFER: I wonder who that could be? It better not be the caterer--Doug told me he got everything straightened out-
CALLIOPE: Blot for me, one more time...
HOPE: (overlapping) I'll get it, Jen. (beat) Uh... Jen, it's Jack...
JENNIFER: (takes the phone) Jack?
CUT TO: JACK ON THE OTHER LINE
JACK: Jennifer-
JENNIFER: (worried by the sound of his voice) Jack, what is it? What's wrong? I can tell something's wrong...
JACK: It's, uh... It's Vern...
JENNIFER: Vern?
JO immediately looks at JENNIFER.
JENNIFER: Jack, what happened to Vern?
JACK: He collapsed, Jennifer... I found him lying on the ground, and I called 911... We're at the hospital right now...
JENNIFER: Oh my God! What was it, do they know? What happened?
JACK: I haven't gotten anyone to tell me anything yet--they just rushed him in... He... Can you come? Please?
JENNIFER: Don't worry, I'll be right there, Jack... I'll be right there...
She hangs up the phone, and JO grabs her arm in concern.
JO: Jennifer, what happened?
JENNIFER: It's Vern, Jo... Jack found him on the ground, unconscious-
JO: Oh no... Oh no...
JENNIFER: They're at the hospital... (looks at everyone) I have to go there right now...
JO: I want to go with you...
ADRIENNE: Uh, we'll stay behind and watch Abby. Go on.
JENNIFER: Thanks, Adrienne... (to JO) He'll be fine, Jo. Don't you worry. He'll be fine...
OUT on JENNIFER and JO as they leave for the hospital.
SCENE 6
INT. SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL - LATER
JENNIFER and JO have arrived at the hospital. JENNIFER sees JACK and rushes over to hug him. JACK is very shaken.
JENNIFER: Oh, Jack... How is he, do they know anything yet?
JACK sees JO there, and hesitates to say something in front of her.
JO: Son, what is it? Is it bad?
JACK: He's... he's had a heart attack.
JO: (puts her hand to her mouth, starts to tear up) Oh no... No...
JENNIFER: Oh my God, do they know how bad it is?
JACK: I haven't been able to get much more information-
CRAIG comes over.
JACK: Dr. Wesley--Dr. Wesley, how is he?
CRAIG: He'll be fine, Mr. Deveraux. Mr. Scofield is a lucky man. It was a minor heart attack. We've got him stabilized.
JO: Can we see him?
CRAIG: Not just yet, I'm afraid. (to JACK) Has his family been notified?
JACK: I've, uh... I've called his sons--they're in Las Vegas. They're coming on the next flight over here.
CRAIG: Good. Listen--I don't want you to worry. He is not going to need surgery, and that's good news. We'll keep him here to monitor him and make sure he's stable. But he will be fine.
JACK: Thank you, doctor.
CRAIG: Of course. (leaves)
JACK: It's my fault...
JENNIFER: What do you mean it's your fault?
JACK: (overlapping) It's my fault... I put him through all kinds of stress with the wedding, and-
JENNIFER: Jack, what are you talking about? Don't... Hey... (grabs his chin to turn his face towards her) Vern's one tough customer. He's got a high threshold for stress. Not even you could break him.
JACK half-smiles.
JENNIFER: We'll just... have to pray for him. We'll have to pray he'll be all right.
JACK nods. He notices JO is crying. He goes over to her, and without a word, puts a hand on her shoulder. JO collapses in his arms and sobs. JACK tentatively raises his arms up to embrace her.
JACK: He'll be fine, Jo... He'll be just fine...
OUT on the three.
EPISODE 34
SCENE 1
INT. SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL - NIGHT (SAME DAY AS EPISODE 33)
JACK and JENNIFER have just visited VERN and are walking slowly down the hallway, hand in hand. They are both still shaken up after finding out about VERN'S heart attack, especially JENNIFER. JACK watches her as they are walking and sees her with her head down. He knows how much this has affected her.
JACK: (giving her hand a squeeze) Are you going to be okay?
JENNIFER: (looks up at him) Yeah, I'll... be fine...
JACK: (unconvinced) You're sure?
JENNIFER: (smiles, touched by his concern) I will, I promise. I guess this whole ordeal just really got to me, that's all. I've been so caught up in all the craziness of planning the wedding and obsessing over all the little details, and something like this comes along and reminds you once again what's really important... (stops walking, faces him) How fragile life is...
JACK: I know.
JENNIFER: He's been such a big part of our lives, Jack. I can't imagine him not being around.
JACK: (smiles) Indeed. Whom would I have to kick around?
JENNIFER: (swatting playfully him on the arm, laughs) You're so horrible to him-
JACK: Oh come on, he knows I don't mean it half the time. (turns serious) I mean, he is... he is the closest thing to a father that I've ever had, really.
JENNIFER: (softly) I know. And Brian and Tanner--I can't even imagine what it must have been like for them to hear the news. (looks back up at him; she is very emotional now) When I think about how close I came to losing you... (takes a breath) It all just came rushing back to me today-
JACK: (takes her in his arms and holds her for a while, then pulls away so he can look at her, and cups her face with his hands) Hey, it's all right... I'm fine now. And Vern will be too, you'll see. Have you ever met anyone more stubborn in your life? (grins) Besides yourself of course.
JENNIFER: (smiles) You're right. You're right, I mean Dr. Wesley said it was only a minor heart attack, and knowing Vern, he'll be back to normal again soon. (beat) As long as we keep him away from you, that is.
JACK: (arching an eyebrow) Are you implying I raise his stress level?
JENNIFER: Just a little bit... (holds up her index finger and thumb to indicate "a little bit")
JACK: I guess I do know how to light a fire under him... (smiles at her) Well, it is good to see that smile again.
JENNIFER: (laughs softly) I just wish we could have a do-over of this day. (shakes her head) What a day...
JACK looks at her for a few moments and thinks of an idea.
JACK: I think I know just the thing to cheer up my once and future wife.
JENNIFER: (suspicious) Care to let me in on whatever this is?
JACK: (grinning) Well, now it wouldn't be a surprise then, would it?
OUT on JENNIFER'S curiosity.
SCENE 2
INT. SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL - LATER
JACK has just told JENNIFER that he has thought of a way to cheer her up, but he will not tell her what it is, much to JENNIFER'S frustration. He is off in the corner talking with someone on the phone and JENNIFER is trying to hear his conversation, but can not make out anything.
JACK: Great, that's perfect... Thank you very much, I really appreciate this. I think we just need to get away for a little bit after today. Yes... I will, I'll call you later. Thank you.
He hangs up and sees JENNIFER looking back at him, ready to burst from curiosity. He gives her his "happy Jack" smile and walks back to where she is standing.
JENNIFER: (trying to play it cool) Well?
JACK: (takes her hand and gently tugs on it so they can leave) Well, it is all set. Come on-
JENNIFER: (does not move when he tries to pull her along) Wait a minute--what's all set? You still haven't told me what that was all about, Jack.
JACK: (trying to act mysterious) Oh, just making a few arrangements. I called Adrienne to make sure she and Justin could watch Abigail for a little bit longer. I think Jo wants to stay here for a few more hours, so-
JENNIFER: And where are we going?
JACK: (leans in close) I told you, it's a surprise. (grins) You'll just have to trust me.
JENNIFER: (narrowing her eyes) You have no idea how much it frightens me when you say that, Jack.
JACK: Oh come now, what is life with me if not one long, exciting adventure?
JENNIFER: (thinks about it for a while, then finally smiles) I guess normal is overrated, isn't it?
JACK: (shudders) Very. (tugs on her hand again) Come on, milady, off we go...
OUT on JACK and JENNIFER as they leave the hospital.
SCENE 3
INT. JACK AND JENNIFER'S CAR - LATER
JACK has just whisked JENNIFER away for a surprise to cheer her up over their wedding being postponed and VERN being hospitalized. As they are driving, the scenery begins to become very familiar to JENNIFER and she turns to JACK and smiles.
JENNIFER: You think you're pretty clever, don't you?
JACK: (grinning) As a matter of fact...
JENNIFER: (laughing) I can't believe you did this...
JACK: (feigning innocence) Did what?
JENNIFER: Oh come on, Jack, I know exactly where we are.
JACK: I should hope so, as it is a very special place.
JACK has taken JENNIFER to the cabin where he took her to keep her from marrying EMILIO. JENNIFER is touched that he would bring her here, and smiles and leans over to kiss his cheek.
JACK: Well... what was that for?
JENNIFER: That was for being the sweetest-
JACK grimaces; he hates being called sweet.
JENNIFER: -most thoughtful, most romantic man in the world.
JACK: I beg your pardon, could you repeat that last part?
JENNIFER: (feeling playful) Which part?
JACK: You know which part.
JENNIFER: Oh, you mean the part about you being the most romantic man in the world?
JACK: (sly grin) That would be it, yes. I just want to savor those words, as I have been accused in the past of the exact opposite--by yourself, as a matter of fact.
JENNIFER: Well, clearly I was just not myself when I said that.
JACK: (smiles, leans in to kiss her gently on the lips) Clearly.
He opens the driver's side door, then goes around to open JENNIFER'S door and help her out. They walk up to the pathway, as JENNIFER continues to be amazed that he has brought her here.
JENNIFER: (following JACK inside the cabin) You know, I still can't believe you managed to arrange this all at the last minute--literally. I mean, how did you... (she sees JACK smiling) What?
JACK: What what?
JENNIFER: I know that look, Jack Deveraux, what are you hiding?
JACK: I suppose I can let the cat out of the bag now...
JENNIFER'S eyes widen in surprise.
JACK: You see, I was trying to think of the perfect wedding present to give to my bride. It had to be something with a lot of meaning, naturally... and so...
JENNIFER: (whispers) Oh, Jack...
JACK: (smiles) It's ours. This cabin, I bought it, for... us... This is my wedding present.
JENNIFER: (very emotional) I can't believe it... I can't... This is just... Oh, Jack! (she excitedly jumps into his arms)
JACK: (laughing) I figured we could also continue the tradition of birthing our children in log cabins-
JENNIFER: (interrupting him with a kiss) This is perfect.
JACK: (blushing) I'm glad it pleases you.
JENNIFER: I love it. And I love you.
JACK: I... (with great emotion) I love you too...
He strokes her cheeks affectionately and they lean in to kiss each other again.
SCENE 4
EXT. THE CABIN - LATER
JACK and JENNIFER are standing outside, looking at the stars. JACK is standing behind her, holding her, and JENNIFER is leaning back against his chest. They are enjoying this quiet moment after the crazy day they have had.
JACK: (kissing her hair) Well, this isn't exactly the honeymoon we had planned, but it's... it's not so bad, is it?
JENNIFER: (turning around to face him) No, it's not bad at all. In fact, it's rather nice, Jack. I can't think of a better way to ring in the new year than to be here with you in this place.
JACK: So you're saying we should have just come here for our honeymoon instead of Venice?
JENNIFER: (laughs) Venice will still be there when we finally have the wedding, Jack. In the meantime, I suppose things do work out as they should, since this is just perfect.
JACK: I suppose we have Vern to thank for giving us a scare then, and leading us here-
JENNIFER: (groans) You are terrible, you know that?
JACK: (leans in close) Last chance to back out, Mrs. D. Are you sure you want to be stuck with me for life?
JENNIFER: Surer than I've ever been about anything in my life. (leans in as well; they can feel each other's breath on their faces) There's nothing I want more than to be stuck with you for the rest of my life, Jack Deveraux.
JACK: (smiles) Good, I'm glad to hear that. (kisses her)
JENNIFER: (when they pull away) You know, as nice as this has turned out--and thank God Vern's going to be all right--I still regret one thing.
JACK: (kisses her forehead) What's that?
JENNIFER: That we didn't get to say our vows. (looks up at him) We've waited so long, Jack, so many years to get this right. I really wanted to stand there in front of the people we loved and promise to love you and cherish you forever...
JACK looks at her with great love, amazed that they have been able to work through everything thrown at them.
JACK: Well... it won't exactly be legal, but... what do you say we exchange our vows right now? Consider it a practice run, if you will--for the real ceremony.
JENNIFER: (touched that he would suggest this) This will be just as real, Jack.
JACK: Shall we get started, then?
He takes her hands in his.
JACK: I, Jack Harcourt Deveraux, take you, Jennifer Rose Horton Deveraux, to be my wife. My partner in crime, my other half, my true equal. I promise to always bring love, adventure, and laughter--with an extra emphasis on the laughter--(JENNIFER laughs) into your life. (becomes really emotional) I promise not to push you away or shut you out during the darker moments we may go through. And I promise to never, ever take you for granted.
JENNIFER can not speak right away because she is overcome with emotion from what he just said. Finally, she finds her voice.
JENNIFER: I, Jennifer Rose Horton Deveraux, take you, Jack Harcourt Deveraux, to be my husband. My lifeline, my rock, my soul. I promise to laugh at all your stupid jokes (JACK pretends to be offended, then laughs). I promise to be patient and open. And I promise to never, ever doubt you again.
JACK: I believe this is the part where the minister tells me I can kiss the bride.
JENNIFER: (smiles) Well, what are you waiting for then?
JACK leans in and kisses her. Both savor the kiss, grateful that after everything they have dealt with in the last few months, they are back together, stronger than ever.
JACK: (softly) So, uh...
JENNIFER: Yes?
JACK: Um, do you remember what I said the other day about... waiting for our wedding night?
JENNIFER: Oh yes, I most definitely remember that conversation. And the cold shower that followed afterwards.
JACK half-smiles.
JENNIFER: Are you trying to tell me something, Mr. Deveraux?
JACK: I see that razor-sharp reporter's instinct is back.
JENNIFER: Mm hmm. Well, that's what happens when one is exposed to the best there is. (grins) So... are you saying what I think you're saying?
JACK: (smiles) Probably. (beat) I know that technically this is not our real, legal wedding night, but... we're not going to start doing things the traditional way now, are we?
JENNIFER: (smiles back at him) No... No, I mean, why start being conventional now, right?
He takes her hand and kisses it, then leads her back inside the cabin.
JACK: Precisely. (kisses her) Have I told you, Mrs. D., how much I love the way your mind works?
JENNIFER: Once or twice. But I have an even better idea. How about you show me exactly how much?
JACK: (grins) Your wish is my command, milady...
He takes her face in his hands and they kiss passionately, then they sink down to the bed.
OUT on their kiss.
SCENE 5
INT. THE CABIN - LATER
JACK and JENNIFER are lying on the bed, with her head resting on his chest. He is stroking her hair, and they are both in bliss, content to savor the beauty of this moment.
JENNIFER: (very emotional) God, I have missed you...
JACK: (kisses the top of her head) And I have missed you...
JENNIFER props herself up on her elbow so they are facing each other. JACK continues to gently and affectionately stroke her hair and her face.
JENNIFER: Jack, we've... hurt each other so much over the last few months... And I wish-
JACK: (puts his finger on her lips) Don't... Don't give into regret--isn't that what you said to me before?
JENNIFER smiles and nods.
JACK: What matters is the here and now. You taught me that.
JENNIFER: Carpe Diem.
JACK: (smiles) You've been studying your Latin.
JENNIFER: (laughs) Yes, well it helps when you've got one hell of a gorgeous teacher...
JACK is embarrassed.
JACK: (tentatively) You... think I'm gorgeous?
JENNIFER: (teasing him) Who says I was talking about you?
JACK: Oh, just for that, you're not going to get an encore...
JENNIFER: Oh we'll see about that... (giggles and pulls the covers over them) I have my ways...
JACK: Whoa... You certainly do...
OUT on their laughter.
EPISODE 35
SCENE 1
INT. SALEM UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL - DAY (A FEW DAYS AFTER EPISODE 34)
JACK and JENNIFER are visiting VERN at the hospital. They are standing outside of VERN'S room. JENNIFER is holding JACK'S hand and starts to go in, but JACK does not move.
JENNIFER: (noticing that JACK is hesitating) Jack, what's wrong?
JACK: Nothing... Nothing's wrong.
JENNIFER gives him a look.
JACK: What?
JENNIFER: Nothing's wrong, huh?
JACK: That's what I said.
JENNIFER: (smiles) I see. So is there any particular reason then, why you seem to be rooted to that spot?
JACK: I don't know what you mean-
JENNIFER: Oh come on, Jack, you can't fool me.
JACK: I... (sighs) Look, he's probably resting. He needs rest, the doctor said so, right?
JENNIFER: Yeah, but-
JACK: So the last thing he needs is me going in there, aggravating him.
JENNIFER: (laughs) Jack, you're not going in there to aggravate him, you're going in there to see him and let him know you care. (tugs on his hand again) So, come on...
JACK: Wait, wait...
JENNIFER turns around to look at him.
JACK: Let's just... Can we just wait a little bit?
JENNIFER: I think I know what's going on.
JACK: You do?
JENNIFER: (nods) Yeah, I do. You forget I know you better than anyone else in the world.
JACK: (half-smiles) Well tell me then, Amazing Kreskin, why do I not want to go in there?
JENNIFER: Because you're scared.
JACK: I'm... what?
JENNIFER: You're scared to go in there and see him. (beat) I'm right, aren't I, Jack?
JACK looks away because he knows she is right.
SCENE 2
IN PROGRESS
JENNIFER has correctly guessed why JACK is hesitant to go visit VERN.
JENNIFER: I guess I can take your silence as a yes.
JACK: Jennifer-
JENNIFER: Jack.
JACK: (nervously scratches his eyebrow) Why would I be scared to go in there?
JENNIFER: Oh, I don't know... (takes his chin and pulls his face towards her) Because maybe you're scared to see him like this? With all these IV's stuck in him, and all these machines and monitors hooked up to him? It's hard for you to see him like that, isn't it?
JACK: Come on, Jennifer... You and I both saw him the day it happened--we were here, remember? Right inside there in his room-
JENNIFER: I know that, Jack, but you were still in shock at that point--we both were. It hadn't really sunk in yet. Not until now.
JACK can not say anything in response.
JENNIFER: I know it's going to be hard, all right? But I'm right here, so we'll be doing it together. And Dr. Wesley said he's going to be fine, in fact weren't you the one telling me that before?
JACK: I was merely saying that to keep you from freaking out.
JENNIFER: (gives him a knowing smile) Oh right, right... Of course...
JACK knows she is teasing him and smirks back at her.
JENNIFER: Well, it's true. He is going to be all right, and they're going to let him go home soon, so there's nothing to be scared of. (beat) Okay?
JACK nods.
JENNIFER: All right, let's go...
They go inside and see JO, who is also visiting.
JO: Jack! Jennifer! Come in, come in...
JACK: (muttering to JENNIFER) Well, she certainly looks at home here...
JENNIFER jabs JACK in the ribs.
VERN: (weakly) Jo's right, come on in! Brian and Tanner went to the cafeteria for a little bit, so you'll see them in a little while... I am so glad to see you two!
JENNIFER: (walks over to him) Oh, we're so glad to see you too, Vern. You look great, really great.
VERN: (giving her a look) I don't know about great, Jenny-girl. Better maybe, but not great. But thanks for trying to spare my feelings.
He notices JACK standing awkwardly by the door, with his hands in his pockets.
VERN: Hey, it's all right, Jack, I don't bite.
JACK laughs nervously and comes closer. Vern is amused to see JACK so worried about him.
VERN: Listen, now that you two are here--I just want to apologize for ruining your wedding-
JENNIFER: Oh no, no, no, Vern--don't even try to apologize!
VERN: Hey, if it weren't for me, you kids would be off sailing the canals of Venice instead of visiting me in a hospital room.
JACK: You know something, Venice probably isn't at its best at this time of the year anyway. I mean, it's the middle of winter, the canals are probably frozen-
JENNIFER: (laughs) What Jack is trying to say is... all we care about is that you are going to be better. Don't worry about us, we will get married as soon as you're strong enough--however long it takes.
VERN: (touched) Aww, Jenny-girl... You don't have to put off your wedding for me. I know how long you both have waited for this day, and I don't want you to wait any longer than you have to.
JACK: Look, we are not... we are not getting married without you and that's final. (looks at JENNIFER, who smiles at him) This is non-negotiable.
JENNIFER: That's right Vern. We want you to be a part of this, and we're going to wait for you to get better.
JACK: I think she just wanted the big wedding, personally-
JENNIFER: Jack!
JACK: So consider that your incentive to get the hell out of this place, Vern.
VERN: (smiles) Aye, aye, boss. (beat) I've missed this.
JACK: What, me giving you a hard time?
VERN: Uh... yeah, Jack.
JACK: Well, it's your lucky day, Vern. Because I'm here to tell you that you'll be getting more of that very soon.
VERN: I'm almost afraid to ask what you mean by that.
JENNIFER: He means... that we have something to tell you, Vern.
She looks at JACK, then looks back at VERN and smiles.
OUT on VERN'S curiosity.
SCENE 3
IN PROGRESS
JACK and JENNIFER have piqued VERN'S curiosity about something.
VERN: Well, is one of you going to say something before you give me another heart attack from the anticipation?
JACK: Are you sure you can take it?
VERN: Would you just tell me-
JACK: All right, all right! Take it easy, all right?
JO: Come on, son, don't leave us all in suspense here... What's going on?
JENNIFER: Jack's got some news, Jo. Some big news.
JO: What is it?
JACK: I, uh... Let's just say I've reacquired something that once belong to me.
VERN: (muttering) Your sarcasm?
JACK: (glaring at VERN) I heard that.
VERN grins at him.
JACK: Suffice to say, this was something of which I had been in pursuit for a long time. And, uh... at times it seemed quite the impossible dream.
JO: You mean...
JENNIFER: He did it. He got The Spectator back!
VERN: Jack!
JO: (overlapping) Oh, son!
VERN: How did you ever...
JACK: Apparently, Victor was moved by the yuletide spirit and got the itch to sell it to me. Or perhaps it was something else that motivated him, such as the divorce fairy-
VERN: What?
JACK: In any case, it is back in my hands. For better or worse, of course.
VERN: Congratulations, Jack. This is unbelievable news!
JACK: (smiles) Yes, indeed. So if the wedding is not a good enough motivator to get yourself all patched up, then I hope returning to the paper is--now that you'll no longer have to work for the lovely Kate.
VERN: When you put it that way, Jack, I don't know that I like this any better-
JACK: I'll give you that one for free since you're in a hospital. But you'd better watch it, Vern. It's never wise to give your boss a hard time, remember.
VERN: (grins) I'll try to remember that.
JACK: (clears his throat) Well... Jennifer and I should get going--you need your rest.
VERN: Are you sure? You two don't want to stay until Brian and Tanner get back?
JACK: I tell you what, why don't we have all three of you over for dinner as soon as you're up for it. (to JO) You can, um... come too, of course. If you're still here.
JO: That sounds wonderful, son.
JACK: So what do you say, Vern?
VERN: I'd really like that, Jack.
JACK: Well, um...
JENNIFER: (takes JACK'S hand) You're welcome, Vern.
JACK: Yes, that. (beat) You're welcome.
JACK and JENNIFER start to leave, but VERN stops them.
VERN: Wait-
They turn around.
VERN: I just wanted to say... I really appreciated you two coming here to visit me. You guys are the best.
OUT on JACK and JENNIFER smiling at him.
SCENE 4
INT. THE SPECTATOR - LATER
JACK and JENNIFER have come to the newspaper for the first time since JACK bought it back from TITAN. They watch the busy newsroom in silence and marvel at everything.
JACK: Brings back some memories, huh?
JENNIFER: (emotional) Yeah, it does.
A REPORTER spots them, and recognizes JACK from his days as the owner/publisher. She comes up to him.
REPORTER: Mr. Deveraux!
JACK: Stacy? Stacy Walters, right?
REPORTER: Yes, you remember me!
JACK: Of course, I do. One of our best metro reporters... It's great to see you again.
REPORTER: Thank you, Mr. Deveraux. I heard the fantastic news this morning, is it true you're really going to take over the paper again?
JACK: Yes, actually, it is true, as a matter of fact.
REPORTER: You have no idea how wonderful we all think it is. We'd been in horrible shape ever since Titan took over all those years ago.
JENNIFER: Well, you can bet Jack's going to turn that all around.
REPORTER: I sure hope so. We're all counting on it.
She leaves. JENNIFER turns to JACK and smiles.
JENNIFER: What do you think about that? That was quite a nice welcome, don't you think?
JACK: Certainly better than the welcome I got when I first bought this place.
JENNIFER: The circumstances are a little better this time around, I would say.
JACK: Indeed. (beat) So, Mrs. D., what do you say we check out the new--or should I say, former--digs?
JENNIFER: Let's go.
JACK takes her hand and leads her to his old office. They stand in front of the door, where KATE'S name is still written.
JACK: I hope she cleaned out her things like she said she would.
JENNIFER: (giggling) If she didn't, I'll be happy to help you do it.
JACK gives her a conspiratorial smile and opens the door. He turns on the lights and groans.
JACK: Oh, would you look at that? (goes over to the desk) The woman didn't even bother to throw out these old take-out cartons. Look, there's even food inside of them still!
JENNIFER: What? Let me take a look at this... (takes one of the cartons and sniffs it) That's funny, it still smells okay. It's still warm too, I-
She pauses, having figured this all out.
JENNIFER: Wait a minute, Jack, Kate didn't leave this here.
JACK: She didn't? Well, then who did?
JENNIFER: (grinning at him) These are from Grand Fortune, Jack.
JACK: Are they? Hmm, so they are. Someone has good taste.
JENNIFER: There are pot stickers here.
JACK: There are, huh? Well, perhaps you could sneak a taste of some-
JENNIFER: Oh, give it up, I know already! I know you set this all up...
JACK: (grins) All right, I confess. I thought perhaps you'd enjoy some lunch in a familiar place.
JENNIFER: Just like the old days.
JACK: That's the idea. (kisses her)
OUT on JENNIFER'S smile.
SCENE 5
INT. JACK'S OFFICE AT THE SPECTATOR - LATER
JACK and JENNIFER are having lunch at his desk, as they did when they used to work together at the newspaper. JACK is sitting in his chair and JENNIFER is sitting on his lap.
JACK: You've been awfully quiet for a while now. I, uh... thought this would be a nice surprise, but you don't seem to be enjoying yourself-
JENNIFER: (snapping out of her reverie) Oh, no, Jack, this is perfect. It is. It was incredibly sweet--I mean, thoughtful.
JACK: Then why the long face?
JENNIFER: I don't have a long face-
JACK: Oh, I beg your pardon, you do. (looks at her intently) Something you want to talk about?
JENNIFER smiles.
JACK: What?
JENNIFER: Nothing, it's just that I'm usually the one trying to draw things out of you, that's all.
JACK: Well, that doesn't mean we can't switch roles once in a while, right?
JENNIFER: Right.
JACK: So... what's got you so preoccupied? What's wrong?
JENNIFER: Nothing's wrong...
JACK gives her a questioning look.
JENNIFER: Really, Jack, nothing's wrong. I promise.
JACK: But...
JENNIFER: But... I was just thinking of the old days, that's all.
JACK: Ah.
JENNIFER: What do you mean, 'Ah'?
JACK: Nothing, just 'Ah.' 'Ah' as in, I think that was a hint on your part.
JENNIFER: What are you talking about?
JACK: I'm talking about the fact that I know what you're getting at.
JENNIFER: Your turn to read my mind now, huh?
JACK: As a matter of fact... yes. (beat) You're reminiscing about the time when we worked here together, am I right?
JENNIFER smiles.
JACK: I am going to take that as a yes.
JENNIFER: All right, yes. You're right.
JACK: And you're wondering why I haven't said anything before now about... your part in all of this.
JENNIFER: Jack, look, I don't want you to feel obligated here, I mean this is your baby-
JACK: Correction. It is our baby. Ours.
JENNIFER: (emotional) You mean it? A-Are you saying... I can come back here again? That I can be a reporter here again?
JACK: No, that's not what I'm saying at all.
JENNIFER: (disappointed) Oh.
JACK: Because you will be the co-publisher.
JENNIFER: (doesn't absorb it at first) It was silly of me to think that I could... What?
JACK: (smiling) You heard me. Co-publisher.
JENNIFER: Me?
JACK: Yes, you. Do you see any other Mrs. Deveraux in this room?
JENNIFER: (teases him, looks around) Hmm, no Kayla... No Eve... Huh, what do you know, I guess you are talking about me-
JACK interrupts her with a kiss.
JENNIFER: Co-publisher... Jack, I... I don't know what to say.
JACK: How about, you'll do it?
JENNIFER: You're really going to let me be your partner?
JACK: I do believe you've been my partner for a long time now, Jennifer. Now we're just making it official. I couldn't imagine doing this without you--you helped me build this place to what it was the first go-around. I need you here. (beat) So, what do you say?
JENNIFER: (smiles) I would be honored, Jack. (kisses him) You know what this means, don't you?
JACK: I'm afraid to ask.
JENNIFER: It means that I have equal say in everything that goes on around here.
JACK: Try not to let the power go to your head.
JENNIFER: We're going to take this to the top, Jack. Ferraros, Peabodies, Pulitzers...
JACK: Forget Knight Ridder, forget Gannett, forget Tribune--Deveraux Publishing is the future of the newspaper publishing world!
JENNIFER: (laughing) You and me, Jack... We'll do it together.
JACK: Yes, we will.
JENNIFER: So, I just want to know one thing.
JACK: What?
JENNIFER: Does this mean I get Diana's old office?
JACK: You mean you don't want to share this one?
JENNIFER: (smiles) Well, as... (kisses him) tempting as that offer is... (kisses him again) And I can see some definite advantages... (another kiss) I think just the same I'd like my own office.
JACK: Very well. (grins) I'll tell you what, though. I'll make you a deal.
JENNIFER: Which is?
JACK: You'll have to sleep with the boss to get your own office.
JENNIFER: I thought you said we were equal partners.
JACK: All right, you'll have to sleep with your equal partner then.
JENNIFER smiles, then walks over to the door and locks it, then closes the blinds.
JENNIFER: You drive a hard bargain, Mr. Deveraux.
JACK: (smiles back at her as he takes her in his arms) Don't I know it...
OUT on the two kissing.
