Rodin and John the Baptist

When Rodin made his “John the Baptist,” it was so lifelike that people accused him to have cast it from a live model. This enraged him.

A three-man committee was appointed to see him on hand and ascertain whether he really possessed the skill it takes to do the controversial piece.

At the day appointed he stood ready with all his materials in front of the judges. When he was given the permission to do any subject he fancied, he started working. He worked passionately and forgot about the judges.

When finally he stopped he was shocked to learn that many hours had passed and the judges had many times called his attention but failed.

His work was magnificent and this he did without a model. His secret was that he had done a study of the subject a hundred times.

He was vindicated.
