A general, non-academic site covering several areas of world history. Follow the links to their archives of articles organized by topic and time period.
HTML Hypertext of American History
This on-line overview of American history provides active links to key words and phrases in the text. The USIA outlines have recently been supplemented by extensive primary sources. A good starting point if you haven't read much US history lately.

Historical Text Archive: USA
Mississippi State University's comprehensive guide to on-line primary-source documents in American History. This site provides links to hundreds of source collections covering all aspects of American history. Visit here to find links to the writings of Louisa May Alcott, cartoons about the New Deal, and major speeches of Civil Rights leaders.
The American Religious Experience
A collection of links to cites related to religious expression and experience in the United States. Besides links to most of the major churches' web pages, this site also has links to popular movements, Supreme Court decisions, and an Elvis Sightings Collection.

Document Collections

Archiving Early America
This site displays a variety of eighteenth-century documents (maps, drawings, and written material) as digitized images. Besides providing access to some fascinating material (including George Washington's account of his 1754 Ohio Campaign, published in the Maryland Gazette), this site is also useful for its display of the documents in their original form.
American Memory: Historical Collections for the National Digital Library
"American Memory is the online resource compiled by the Library of Congress National Digital Library Program. With the participation of other libraries and archives, the program provides a gateway to rich primary source materials relating to the history and cultural developments of the United States."
The History Buff
"This site is devoted to newspaper press coverage of events in American history. It includes an extensive, searchable, reference library with the categories Civil War, Baseball, Engravings, Journalism Hoaxes, Old West including Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Crime figures such as Bonnie and Clyde, Lizzie Borden and over a dozen other categories. The Presidential Library includes the inaugural addresses of all U.S. presidents."
National Archives Online Exhibit Hall
Online copies of important documents in American history, including the Constitution, the Emancipation Proclamation, and Nixon's Letter of Resignation, as well as a collection of World War II propaganda posters and photographs of the American experience.
